  • hello, I wish to buy a cue...

    hello guys,
this is my first post, so go easy on me, lol.
I've been playing snooker for a few months now, and really wanted to get a cue for life. so I'm thinking of upgrading to a Parris cue. a bit on the heavy side, but a 57".
i need some advice on what to get, and yes, i kind am inclined to get a flashy cue, rather than their high end cue, which i believe is very plain[ i read that here]. so probly a majestic vue or a regency cue.
could someone tell me which is the best one in their range, and what you recommend in terms of customization. upto £700 is ok.

    thank you in advance

parris cues has a "cue builder" function on their website... might want to play with that and see what works for you... its probably the most direct method of finding something to your taste.

Generally, the first cue you buy or high end cue you buy won't be the one you use for life. I have said that many times before I buy a new cue and many times I end up buying others. You really need to trial and error to find a cue that really suits you. As you have only been playing a few months, I wouldn't recommend such a big outlay on a new cue unless you are really sure on your specs as it may not turn out as you expect. Waiting for a cue from parris will be sometime too.

To answer your initial question, for 700quid you could do much better than a John Parris majestic. Trevor White, Stamford Series 1, Mike Wooldridge, Dave Coutts make better cues for less money. In terms of customization and design, there's a thread called post pics of your cue where you can get ideas. Roberosbornecues.co.uk is a good source. As is cueporn.tumblr.com

Hi mate like Jono* said, you could wait quite some time for a parris, not really know your specs, it show up and you not like it. I have a very well made cue with specs as you mentioned at the top with very nice splices like you said you wanted that you could have at considerably less than a Parris would cost. If you wanna see some pics then just email me, will.tyson147@hotmail.com. Hope you find a cue you like :snooker:

I would also go with what jono* said, I played a lot 10 years ago, got back into it april last year and put in an order for a custom cue too quickly, I've played with a few different cues over the summer and twice i had to get in touch with the guy to change spec slightly, a big fault on my part. Might not be a big deal for parris since they have so many folk working there to change spec but for most of them who work on their own it must be a nightmare.... Plus, for that money, you buy a parris and from what I've heard the chances of it being made by him are slim, maybe he has input on every cue (fits the ferrule or the badge or summit....), personally, for that money, I'd be looking at a cook, coutts, wooldridge etc, but there are also many more on this forum, owens, raymo etc. Check out the exquisite cues thread, raymo has a batch order that fell through and has them up for sale. Or go to green baize for some idea's, but seriously don't just shell out that kind of money first time round, unless your minted, in which case, go for it

I'm currently in the same boat, where about a are you based? I'm finding there are some good places up north to go try but not down south. Have a look at my post from a few days back, what makes a good cue. I've spoken to a few cue makers in email and I have a check list now.

              Weight
Length (I'm about 6 foot so thinking about 58")
              Butt size
              Tip size
              Balance point

Now all I need to do is find what I like for each of these checks.

Cues I've been told are really good for the money are Phoenix and Master Cue. Just want to try a load now, problem is not many clubs have a lot of cues to try.

Well what I can tell you that is you pay for the splice on these two cues.

What makes you feel good is the ash.
If you have £700 you can get a £100+ cue and play it for about 2 yrs than get a TW cue.
The first £100 cue will let you know what you want and you can run a lot of things on it without worrying destroy the cue the like changing a tip.

T.White cues or Coutts cues are the best you can get but I think you need wait for about a yr or two. parris best cues like ultimate(£750) you wil have to wait for about 2 and a half yrs. But what will happen is the cue you wait for so long seems not the right one for you to play than you have to sell it and wait for another one.

Get a cue from a cue shop. Pick up different cues and try them. Or what you need is luck.

The best thing is change the way you play for you cue but that can be very difficult.
