  • Member Map?

Is there a feature that could be bolted on that could automatically show where all our members are from? Some sort of interactive/zoomable/filter/clickable application to highlight the reach and volume of members in the world?

I think this would be a brilliant development and it would amaze new and potential members.

    Anyone else agree?

(I could do a map of the world, add some lines with usernames, host it and then update it in a stem thread when new members join, but that sounds intensive to say the least!)#

There's "Google Maps API" Ranen, seems ideal and as with everything Google, it's FREE. I'll pass the baton on now!

it's for webmasters that own or support a website; the Google content I practiced on my own and it looks like it could be ideal... but you need your own website to start with (there's lots of options on this too, whether it's what I use; Anglefire or a blog or a MySpace type presence)

I can see that we could ask David "Snooker" to either look into it or have one of the Web savvy members do that for him. There's another forum that uses it I've since found out and we could have something similar... world wide zoomable map showing where our members are located; would need some protection so that only members could add there info though.

Yeah why not have a map (Don't see you on that one)

Tell you what here is another one I made to give you some more ideas for map features.

this link initially gives the MS error dialogue box saying it "can't open the internet page, operation aborted", and then the dreaded "page cannot be found" error too.... drat.

If you meant http://www.jesterssnooker.co.uk/guestmap/index.html Kev, then not needing to look very closely would suggest, "you shudda gone to specsavers" ! I'm even on there twice, made a mistake the first time and plonked myself in southern Morocco! Now that's what a call an ironman commute.

I'd guess when David ("Snooker") gets chance to read and consider this, he'd want to know what he would do from here to get an excellent Member (only) Map; more eager as Google Maps are FREE. There are services to show where guests are surfing in from, NeoCounter for example, but initially restricting it to Members Only would be good. NeoCounter only has a free TRIAL period but having a list of Country Flags with the volume and current countries logged-in looked great on my homepage when I had a play with it.

              time will tell.

it works now; ideal.... so it's free but you've had to tailor it yourself?

(so there's a members one and a guests application then; maybe combine the two and have the option of a filter)

Here is a map i started knocking up a while back for places i been too. So it would look something like this.

                    My Map [url="http://www.rvs.eclipse.co.uk/testmap.shtml"]

If you send me your co-ordinates i'll start a snooker one going. Same for anybody else if they wish to be added let me know.

                    Thanks,
                    Mark
So if we could have a section on the site dedicated to this, we have members that could deliver something bespoke to the forum; looks good. We'll wait for Admin to catch up with us. (Mark; like the Carp, is that a mirror or is my little bit of knowledge dangerous!)

Hope this helps goto http://www.wiltshire-hosting.com/map.php find your location on the map then click add to map this will then show you the longatude and lattitude coordinates Mark will need to add you to his map.

If you are in the USA just click add to map and enter your address and it will find your coordinates for you (I love Geo-coding)

Ok i've started one off if you wish to send your co-ordinates i can update it.

                        http://www.rvs.eclipse.co.uk/snooker.shtml

You can get the co-ordinates by putting your postcode or town into www.multimap.com

I need the bit that looks like this :
                        Lat: 51:11:42N (51.1951) Lon: 0:16:33E (0.2757)

Yup thats one of the small mirror carp i caught on a french carp fishing holiday last year, its my other love in life! The most relaxing but equally most annoying sport on the planet. But like in snooker when it all comes together you just cannot beat the feeling.

I like the map too. Dont know how to use it though. I tried zooming in to India , after a certain amount of zooming it said it didnt have the map at that zoom level. How do I put up my mark in the map?
