Should we keep the reputation feature? Get rid of it? or find another similar concept for us to use?

    Ferret,

I think that reputation and moderation in general is useful. It helps avoiding that differences in opinion turn into bad arguments and subsequent hard feelings. I definitely don't want to see this forum going the 606 way ...
But then reps - positive or negative - should always be "signed", and authors invited to give an short explanation/comment, especially when negative. My personal line of conduct would be to be liberal with positive reps, in particular when contributions are well to the point, useful or funny. Negative rep would only be on the agenda if a post was totally inappropriate, insulting or really nasty ... and I definitely would sign it and send a private mail to the author to explain my position.
Being all different persons we have to expect and accept that some of us will disagree, and stand their ground.

Keep it, but tweak it a bit:
      -Signing is a good start.
-possibly negative reps would have to be approved by administrator/moderator
-Maybe have rep-scales as well (there are suddenly lots of members with higher rep-power, who might not always wish to dole out the full value for a certain post)
-Increase that 'hit the same person count' a bit again

          Hi Ferret,

........good thread, and happy to keep rep system, and as a process, it's a good way to moderate. And maybe helpful too, if all reps could be signed.

From some of the comments I've read on the negative rep thread, which is a good collection of thoughts, just wondering if it would be helpful to have a bit more clarity on what it means when you send/receive a positive/negative rep, ie:

Positive rep - does this mean?:
          * it's a post/comment that you find useful; a comment that you agree with; something that you find funny; or perhaps a comment/post that's made you change your mind on something; or the fact that someone has been really supportive to you.

Negative rep , does this mean?:
*you totally disagree with their comments; you find the person's comments unpleasant; the post is inappropriate, or is it just general bad behaviour?

There is a good explanation on rulings regarding this on tsf though, but thought I'd mention it anyway.

And thanks for raising the issue Ferret, and giving everyone the opportunity to feedback comments, and vote.

          Lol.....xx

Belive it or not I say keep it. Totally useless, pathetic even, but I can imagine some situations where it'd be funny.

Although it is not a perfect system I agree that it should be kept.

The strange thing is that each +ve and -ve given dont seem to count for very much. Although its always nice to get a +ve and no one likes to get a -ve, you need to be given 100 rep points for it to equal 1 rep power. Until everyone gets to rep powers of 10 its going to take years for the rep points to add up.

I understand your point about signing the reps as it would be nice if people did, but i could see a problem with being forced to sign -ve reps: it would be like Ebay, whenever anyone gives a -ve feedback the other person childishly retaliates and gives one back. Maybe the repper just be forced to make some sort of explanatory comment when leaving a -ve.

A forum should be a place where anyone can express his opinion. Some might agree and some might disagree. Thats how this world works and even our democracy is based upon difference of opinion.

For example, Having an opinion about a certain snooker referee and illustrated with facts and being negative repped about it makes it farcical imo. Another example, ROS walking off in York. There are members who do not agree with this behaviour but there are also people who defend ROS. No one should be repped on this either positive or negative as it is A MATTER OF OPINION!

Positive reps could be given for posting news items or information where to obtain tickets and when they are going on sale, links posted how to watch snooker online (as I did for Ephkantos).

Negative reps should only be given if it tends to discrimination, insults and other unwanted behaviour. I find this a duty of the moderators as they are the representatives of the forum who made the rules. Not for any forum member as most of us are biased.

                Keep it simple!

Negative reps should definitely be signed and perhaps approved by a moderator.

I think it should be tweaked slightly for example the more rep you have the higher your rep power is. For example you get a higher rep power from making 1000 posts etc but there have been cases where this/those persons constantly type one liners and just because they have made 1000 posts they get to have a higher rep power over someone who continually posts good or informative comments.

On another forum I sometimes visit, they have something similar to reps. The users are able to give a "Thanks", obviously some kind of positive rep. So there are no negative reps allowed, you can't comment the rep and this "Thanks" appears beneath the post you got it for with the name of the user who gave it. As there are only problems with unsigned negative reps...who needs them anyway? You can express your opinion via pm or on the board if you don't agree with someone`s comment.
                        A solution maybe...

in a straight choice between getting rid of it completely and keeping it, id say keep it...

if it was a choice between keeping it and finding another similar concept, then id go for keeping it IF IT CAN BE ALTERED to suit most folks views about the bad parts of it as is now, or if it CANT be altered, try a new concept.

probably best keeping it, as its already established, but if it cant be tweaked and it still causes concerns, then change

I have never actually been bothered by rep.
But I would still like it to be on here.
