Is there a way we can develop a way to allow guests to contribute to the site so that they are further encouraged to register and participate fully and go on to Reply and even Post new threads?
I can imagine that as a guest the anonymous surfer finds it easier to just read a few posts but not really engage in a dialogue than to bother registering and join in completely.
3 possible ways would be to immediately identify them as a Guest and tell them there's a special chat zone for them, allow them their own shout box or better still ask them to participate in a poll exclusive to Guests that could find out what they think of the site, the content, the layout, the likelihood of them registering, what could encourage them to register, when they're likely to register (now, later, tomorrow, next week, next visit etc) and once we've their attention, they might be more likely to register as a member especially if there's an option to add a comment with a vote too. Maybe we could have a special offer of some tsf points as an incentive. (one arm bandits for members could be interesting!)
After they've invested some time in adding their first views of the site or the game or something else, they may feel more part of the community or at least be shown that we're welcoming them even more than before.
One of my ideas recently was to use IP addresses of guests to further personalise their visits; this could be a good time to implement. Instead of just asking a guest who's registering where they're from and allocating them a flag, I'm thinking of showing the guest (before they've registered) who else in their country has registered and maybe some links to their posts or a list of their names - more useful for our foreign friends I admit but it would make the existing Members feel like we've our arms open to welcome "friends we've not yet met", type of cheesey thing. I suppose I should ask whether this is possible for a start, but it sounds a progressive idea that no other Forum currently uses.
If we monitor IP's to avoid Members registering two usernames, is there a way to show the volume of guests the site's been receiving? The only way I know is to click on "who's online" now and again, but that only shows a snapshot and no historical data.
Also, is there a way to reset, "the most users online"? 403 seems excessive as though there was a gaggle of google-bots scouring the web.
?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????
(Happy birthday to silverdragon BTW; a gift of some tsf points perhaps)
(Edit: I've seen in recent weeks a service on some forums where Guests can make comments on the site before they even think of registering)
