  • Thoughts on tournament discussions

I have thought this during every tournament and have only just got round to putting it in writing!

The discussions that we make, when matches are in progress, are likely to be interesting reading after the event, and it occurs to me that, having only a single thread for each tournament, one would have to scroll through loads of stuff to find any reference to a particular match.

I wondered if it might be sensible to have a separate thread for each match (or round, maybe), while leaving the main Tournament Discussion thread to be more generalised stuff not related to a particular match. (Or leave people to start threads about whatever general aspect they want to talk about.)

I appreciate that the downside is that, during play, one would have to flit between threads to be able to comment (or, if you're using the threads for updates, would have to flit between each to be kept informed), but I think somehow it might be beneficial if every match had its own thread.

I think it would be easy enough for someone to start a thread "O'Sullivan v. Perry" or whatever it might be – which might start off previewing the match – and the others will naturally follow.

    Wondered what anyone else thought.

Not a bad idea Statman. You are the boss.

I see your point Statman but somehow the risk is that a lot of threads are started with very little contribution is most and get scattered amongst the other threads - not fitting on one page - so that following the unfolding of the tournament will become difficult. Unless there is a possibility to create "sub-forums" that would serve as a container for all threads related to one one tournament?

I think you are right. Especially under the cruicible things gets bad, and even to find comments made few hours ago can be difficult. I´ll support a split into a general thread and a thread for each round in the tournament.

I've thought about this before. As you say, the problem is that people find it more convenient to stick to one thread at a time. Live comments on tournaments tend to be short and spontaneous, occasionally reporting scores on several matches at once. I worry people might not bother if there was some extra effort required to find the right place to put them.

Splitting it up by round, or perhaps by day since rounds can overlap, would be a good compromise though. I think we could do that and I can't see any downsides.

Hege - it's your section, what do you think?

Monique - We already split major tournaments up into subforums (if this is what you mean). I don't think finding the threads would be an issue.

Not exactly, but I don't know if what I have in mind is possible here. What I had in mind is a link, with a particular icon that would indicate this is a "container link", that when clicked would show all threads related to the tournament of choice but with the kind of organisation of the Home page.

Having said that a split by rounds looks like a good compromise.

It sounds like a good idea. We don't want to have 25 threads with 3 replies in each and 1 thread with 300 replies is a bit unwieldy, so let's try to have a thread for each round and a thread for general discussions and we'll see how it'll pan out.

I think it has worked out really well this week with a new thread for every round. What do you others think ?

I agree Rane. It seems to be a very good compromise. It worked well.
