Thanks must be Google. Works ok with Safari.

I get those symbols and I'm using Safari.

probably to do with updates as Dean says , i'm using Chrome on two devices , one looks normal , the other has the weird characters

for anyone who does not know how to update Google Chrome:
go to the (Customise and Control Google Chrome) three vertical dots top right of the window
Settings
About Chrome
Update should run automatically.

Firefox
top right again but three horizontal lines (Open Application Menu)

About Firefox.
check should be automatic, you may need to restart Firefox session

I can't update my iPad, it's to old

weird , i've just checked on an old hand me down iPad that hasn't updated for a few years , on safari and i don't get those symbols , its all clear.
