  • Ignore list

I am not sure how it works, I have never used it like I have the Buddy list, so I need to check on something. The situation it this:
Within the last week I have sent one of the forum members one private and two pager messages but have had no response. It saddens me terribly to think that someone hates my guts so much as to not even want to return the "happy new year" wishes (especially without telling it to my face) so I gather the messages were never received since I was on that person's ignore list before I sent the messages.
Am I right to think so?

        Happy New Year, Nina!!!!!

Seriously, I would have thought that it would tell you when you pressed 'send' if someone had added you to their ignore list, just like it does if the recipient's mailbox is full.

        Don't know, though.

Happy New Year, thanks for trying to help.
I guess there are more than one ways to ignore someone...
If one is to be notified of being on another member's ignore list, then I should consider the other option...

I wouldnt take any lack of response personally Nina. Maybe the person doesnt know how to respond to pager messages (I know I dont)

I had 2 or 3 happy new year pager messages , but i assumed they were sent via "message all" or something, and i didnt reply, as they flkashed up when i was trying to read another thread - and they just disapered straight away, so cant remember who they were from

I'm sure no offence was intended to anyone by lack of reply.

at least in the pager messages section one can check, if the pager was received at all (changing to messages in folder: sent items)

Let me make a couple of things clear:
                1) I know for a fact the person in question knows very well how to use the messages features, better than me in fact - and I send a lot.
                2) It wasn't random messages like the ones sent to everyone wishing them a HNY, or I wouldn't be troubled.
                3) There is supposed to be a message tracker for private messages which I had never used before but I did use for that message as I had just discovered it, and according to that the PM was never opened either.
Finally and most importantly, my intention was not to complain but to find out how the Ignore list is used so that we can all know in the future. The incident I mentioned was just what made me wonder so please pay no attention to the personal implications.

Has the recipient definitely been on the forum since you sent it?

                    Yes.
I had some help with this, apparently when you are on somebody's Ignore list your private messages do not get through but pager messages do. So my question has been answered.

I did a little search on the forum since there wasn't much information on the Ignore list.
I found that it is possible to block private messages, and there is also the option for the pager messages to choose to accept them only from people on the Buddy list.
I also found this from October 9th, 2006

from which I gather one can choose not to read anything a specific member posts.
I would still appreciate some help on this one though...

I'd like to give you some definitive answers Nina but unfortunately the information available is a bit vague. The official vBulletin manual is particularly unhelpful:

This is a list of users you wish to ignore.
I know that the primary function of this is that it makes an ignored members posts invisible to you when you're reading a thread. It does block communications (like PMs and emails) also, but I'm not sure of the exact mechanics of this, such as whether the sender is informed that they're being ignored or not.

So it looks like if we want to know, we'll have to find out for ourselves. If you like I can add you to my ignore list for a while and you can see what happens when you try to send me a PM.

I can help on the topic of vB Pager though as that's better documented. The pager ignore list is seperate from the main ignore list, and behaves like this:

Originally Posted by vB Pager manual

                            * That user will never be able to send you a pager message and if he/she try to send you a pager message, an error will be displayed saying (User has disabled the use of vB Pager).
                            * In the pager buddylist popup, the link and the check box next to your name will be disabled to the ignored user.
