  • Is this shot allowed...

8-ball EPA rules. You are playing red and have 2-shots, ball in hand. There is a yellow over the pocket covered by the black and 1 red left as well. Are you allowed to free-ball the black on the yellow knocking it in and leaving the black over the pocket? YES / NO?

in epa Worl rules - NO! and on many levels...

    1. you only get to nominate a ball when in a foul snooker, so the only time youd get a ball in hand situation AND to nominate a ball (iirc), would be if you were in a foul snooker situation even after choosing to move the white anywhere behind the line.

    2. (and this is the big one) - ONLY the specific ball you nominate becomes one of your balls for that shot.... so if you nominate that black, but a yellow goes down, its a foul. the only way you could legaly pot that yellow when you have a free ball is to nominate that ball and pot it either directly, or by planting a red onto it.

Yep the way I've interpreted the free-ball with the old EPA rules is that every ball effectively becomes the colour you are playing. As long as you don't pot the black early you are okay. God help me with world rules when that comes in.

Strange how a 'simpler' game than snooker can lead to rules issues. Maybe because there are so many different versions.

All the different rules for English pool make it really hard to understand the rules. Especially for beginners to the game, there are enough disciplines to pool as it is (American 9-ball, American 8-ball, American 10-ball, English 8-ball, etc. etc.) and just to add 'World rules' and 'old EPA rules' and probably many others makes it very confusing!

I understand pool, as I watch and am interested in all Cue Sports, but I don't know all of the rules, I only really play to the 'Pub rules' if such a thing exists even though I would play pool in Rileys and not a pub unless I were there for a meal.

Are EPA rules the world rules played in WEPF world champs?
If yes you don't have any free shot and can't pot the yellow ball touching the black ball first.
