    • I honestly believe that if Ronnie stubbed his toe against a stone on the ground, someone on a message board would come up with a conspiracy theory as to why it happened, maybe Peter Ebdon left it there on purpose for example

                      • "All In The Family

I caught up with the Buteras; hall of famer Lou Butera (born in 1938!), his son Sal Butera, and Caroline Butera, Lou’s wife and Sal’s mother. “The glue of the family,” according to the Butera men.

You can probably count on the fingers of one hand the number of father-son duos who are playing a professional sport at the same time. So I asked the Butera’s what it meant to them to play on the IPT tour together.

“Right now it doesn’t mean anything because we both got knocked out,” says Lou. “But I feel he has a great future with this format. And I’d like to be in it for a few more years myself. I don’t know if it would happen, but I think the day might come when we would have to play each other, and, you know, let the best man win.”

Says Sal: “We’ve played in tournaments at the same time but we’ve never gone head to head. It’s changed for me in the last couple of years. He’s a hall of famer and a world champion. He used to just be my dad. Now I have a lot more respect for what he’s done in his career. I’m really excited; I don’t think it’s been accomplished in very many sports before, with a father and son playing at the same time whether it be boxing or baseball or whatever it is.

“A certain amount of it I think is genetic, and I think that’s where he owes me an apology, because I could have been doing a lot of things more profitable until now,” says Sal with a laugh. “Now that the money’s coming around I forgive him.”

Lou took exception to Sal’s jab. “Let’s get one thing straight. I never encouraged any of my children to play pool until Kevin [Trudeau] came around,” says the living legend. “But since the IPT started with this format and bringing a lot of money into the game, now I really encourage any of my children to play pool. Sal’s already an accomplished player, but I’m trying to talk his brother into playing. He plays pretty good, but it will take him a little while to get to Sal’s level.”

With all the accumulated wisdom of the senior Butera’s storied career at Sal’s disposal, I was surprised to learn that the son doesn’t ask the father for advice during the tournament. “He just asks for a loan, says Lou.

“We don’t talk much about our matches,” says Sal. “We’ll just discuss what happened with different types of techniques and shots, but we don’t give each other advice. As a sounding board, if he wants to tell me what happened we’ll discuss it and same thing for me, if I want to say something he’s always there to listen and discuss it. This game is so mental, though, if you start talking about should have done this, should’ve done that, you’ll never stop talking. Mike Sigel, in fact, he’ll tell you everything, he’ll still be talking about what should have happened in his match yesterday. I just let it go.”

As the season continues, the Butera hope to spend more time together practicing. Lou says, “He did come over and spend a couple of days with me. We don’t get together that much but we’re going to do more of that. I look forward to it.”

Caroline Butera may have the most stressful time on competition days. “She just bites her nails,” says Lou.

“It’s very difficult,” says Caroline. “I’ve done a lot of running back and forth at this tournament; they played on the same day this time. Of course I’m disappointed that they didn’t advance, but it is nerve-wracking. I’m proud of both of them. I think they did their very best. I’d follow them anywhere.”"

                        • "Harriman Gives Crowd Something to Talk About

In a bizarre incident in tonight’s last round, Johnny Archer was down 7-4 against Danny Harriman, who was faced with a shot that he would have to shoot from the middle of the table. So Harriman removed his shoes, climbed onto the table, and then calmly pocketed the ball and won the match. The amassed crowd was astonished, muttering amongst themselves, “Can he do that?”

Afterward Archer remarked to Gabe Owen, “I didn’t even shake his hand. He said, ‘You’re disrespecting me,’ and I said, ‘Hey, we’re in suits and ties here, and you’re jumping on the table like a monkey … you’re disrespecting me.”
Standing nearby, Owen stated, “That’s awful. A loophole like that is bad.”

“He had heard that someone had gotten up on the table,” Archer explained before leaving for the evening. “He basically went to the referee and asked the referee. The referee told him yes, you can get up on the table. So he takes his shoes off, jumps up on all fours, and shoots the balls. It was undignified, it was very disrespectful. No matter if it’s the rule or not, I don’t care. It disrespects the game, and if we’re going to be pros, if we’re going to be professional out here playing the biggest tournament in the world, there’s no call for us to jump up on top of the table and shoot the ball.” Archer still advances to Wednesday’s matches in spite of this loss. Harriman was undefeated for the day and will also advance.

Tournament director Deno Andrews was called upon to comment, and he replied, “I looked at the rules, and apparently it is not a rule in the IPT official rules at this time. At this point it’s just the rule for this tournament, and this is really not the time to be reviewing the rules. I don’t know why it’s not in the rules … I don’t know if it’s necessary or if it’s just historical or traditional, but whatever the case may be, it’s just not a rule.”"
