Free Ball

Last night I came across a situation where I had ball in hand on the black with my opponents ball sat touching it over the far corner pocket, setting up a plant.

My opponent agreed that by the standard rules of a free ball (the ones we use at least) it was legal for me to make the plant to win the game.

In a bizarre twist my opponents ball also headed for the other corner pocket but fortunately stopped hanging on the edge.

I want to know: Was the shot I played legal?

Would it still have been legal if my opponents ball had of gone down too?

Not too sure what game you were playing - Snooker ?? or Billiards ??.
You mentioned Black & your opponents ball???????
If you were playing the 22 ball game snooker, your opponent uses the same cueball.
If you were playing the 3 ball game Billiards - there are 2 cue balls & a red.

My opponents purple 4 ball was sat atop the black 8 ball which I needed to pot to win the game

I play 8 ball and although i'm not completely sure i think it may have been a foul shot if his ball had dropped into the other pocket. When you nominate a free ball i seem to remember that you must also say where you plan to pot the ball if that is what you intend. I'm not a referee though so please don't hold it against me if i'm talking toffee!!! ;-)

Hi Llyod, Yep it was a legal shot you played. I'm assuming standard EPA rules here, if the red then drops in I'm not 100% sure, but I'm suspecting a foul and loss of game. Steedee?

In world rules if you have a free-ball you would have to nominate which ball you're taking as the free-ball.

7. LOSS OF GAME

If a player pockets the 8 ball (black) before all the balls in their own group, except on the break (see rule 4(D)), the player loses the game.

A player going in off the 8 ball (black) when the 8 ball (black) is pocketed, loses the game.

A player pocketing the 8 ball (black) and any other ball on the same shot will lose the game. Except following a foul when only the 8 ball (black) and ball(s) of the opponents group are on the table, then with the first shot of the first visit, the player may legally pocket the 8 ball (black) as well as ball(s) of the opponent's group by any combination and in any order.

its a legal shot, if u couldnt see both sides of the black its deemed as a foul snooker and u can take a free ball. if the puple went in aswell u would of lost

In South Africa we play black ball rules, Now I do not know if this is the same rules than yours.We have a free shot if the other player makes a mistake. If this was our rules. On the free shot you are allowed to play any ball. In your situation it was a legal shot,(8 ball rules. If it was the older rules you had to nominate your opponents ball. If you potted it and the black you would have been fine because you nominated it. If you did not nominate the opponets ball it would have been loss of frame

After a foul snooker has been given, it is perfectly acceptable to nominate an opponents ball to pot "your" ball.
As the nominated "opponents" ball is "yours" also, after being nominated, if it happens to go in as well...all GOOD. No foul.

I'd go with this as well, once you nominated the red,it becomes a second black (cos you are on the black) so potting both is a legal shot.
