Fairly New to Pool - Cue Advice Wanted

yes any tip you like. yes it's a 3/4 split cue, only one of these but plenty of other cues around 200 or so. - oh dear colour scheme...... i am more of a best tool for the job kind of person!

Unfortunately, I am a bit of a tart when it comes to things like this, but it does seem like a very good price for a decent cue...which sort of makes the looks irrelevant...decisions

May I ask what model/name cue it was from Cue Craft?

they were custom made - no make or model - i rang them and asked for what i wanted and they made them for me, plenty of forum members own them and will attest to their quality.

Thanks mate. I know they wouldn't be a low quality, I just wondered in terms of cost mainly - I fully understand that you have to make a profit, so it wouldn't have made a difference of what they cost you.

i could supply you with either of those and make more money! truthfully you should spend a few days reading around the forum about cues - get to know what what because at the moment you are not informed enough to make a decision.

I take it you would charge the same as Cue Craft charge?

I will follow your advice, and have a read around. I have had a read around before, but doing it again won't hurt

May I ask what you would particularly advise that I read about, just so I know what I need to know so I 'informed enough to make a decision'?

i think you don't really know what you are looking for, or what makes a good cue, there are thousands of threads on here that will help you to know what you need. (off the record i might be a bit cheaper than cue craft!)

Right, I have done some reading

This is what I have come up with which would be ideal :

Oil Finish - Varnish/Lacquers get sticky quite easily when compared to an oil finish
8mm-9mm Tip Size - I will probably go for the middle line of 8.5mm, it seems a fairly ideal starting point, which I can always change. I have looked at this thread : http://www.thesnookerforum.com/board...-size-for-pool
Two Piece Cue - I am unsure whether I will go 1/2 or 3/4 yet. I have read this thread : http://www.thesnookerforum.com/board...ues-3-4-or-1-2
17.5-18oz Weight - This seems about the average weight, so it will be an ideal starting point.
Machine Spliced - Obviously I would prefer a hand spliced cue, but it will cost too much for my budget most likely.
Wood - Probably will be Ash, or possibly Maple.
ADR, Can you recommend that I research/look at anything else?

good reading! centre split will be harder to sell on but handy to transport. as for handspliced on a budget of £100 you will need a bit of luck. the finish is everything, getting a cue finished nicely in oil make you a better player - bold statement but i believe it to be true!

the only issue you might have is that to find a cue better than the one i offered for £50 you might need to up your budget to a handspliced cue and that is likely to be £150+

as ADR said, a very good analysis ... just a few thoughts ...

oil finish is best, but it's easy to remove the varnish from a varnished cue - say 10mins with some medium sandpaper - it'll never be as good as an oil finished cue but it will be quite acceptable ...

tip size ... I think the smaller the tip the more nervous the cue - or rather the more accurate you need to be in terms of exactly where you hit the cueball ... I don't know your standard but I think it's good advice not to go really small unless you are totally sure that's what you want, so 8.5 to 9.5mm (for UK 8ball) is a sensible range ...

1/2 or 3/4 ... a lot of personal preference here ... if you're every likely to play on hampered tables (wall too close) then a 3/4 wins every time - you can play with the shaft only or even better, a 3/4 with a mini-butt that fits both the shaft or butt ...

PS ... I think you should seriously consider ADR's £50 3/4 Cue Craft cue ... that has got to be an amazing deal ... from memory, ADR said it had an 8mm tip so a bit small but let's be positive, it'll improve your cueing action no-end learning how to control it

cue is 8.15mm - normally for pool 8-9mm is the range 9.5 is too big and too difficult to generate the quick spin required.
