  • 8ball cue spec

    Hi guys,

wondering, what spec do you guys use for english 8ball? I've used 8mm, light cues (16oz -17oz) for the last years but recently tried a 8.5 17.75oz cue and saw a noticeable improvement so trying to bear all this in mind when i order my shark cue tomorrow!

    comments would be appreciated

It's what suits you that matters, other people's specs mean nothing

Couldn't agree more, but theirs no harm in understanding what is the 'typical' spec for a particular cue form...that way i can analyse/understand if theres something obvious im not considering.
Had many cues with many different specs, just wanting to have a rounded knowledge before i part with hard earned cash

The pool cue I use is 49", 12 Oz, 8.3mm tip, 27mm butt. But like JRC says, specs are subjective.

What length is it with the butt screwed on ?

That's one short cue. Have you always used cues that length, or was it trial and error

to find what suited you ?

Sort of, I began playing pool, from a young age, that kept it's table in a very cramped room, I started out with a shorter version of a pub cue but as I started getting in to playing a bit more, I decided to get my own cue. There used to be an old glass cabinet near the club's entrance where the owner used to have a couple of cues and cases for sale, nothing too fancy mainly bce and mbs cues but there was a craftsman cue that really caught my eye and handily enough I could afford it.
It was too awkward using it for pool at first, but then I found that the mini butt could be used with the shaft. Been playing pool with the same cue for the past 10 years, its just what I'm used to.

That is one short cue! I use my main one piece maple North West cue. 57" about 18oz and an 8mm tip. Also have a 7.5mm old Riley pro that's amazing to hit the balls with. Not too good as a break cue and a couple of 8.5mm cues. A James Butter and a Cue Craft. I prefer one piece cues but I've a 3/4 Craftsman that's nice too.
They're all 57" It really does depend on how you play the game. There's a county player whom I beat at Reading on Sunday who plays with a 7mm tip at best. Big guy and when he breaks the balls go into space. Have a look around and try to play with different size tips and weights etc to see what you find the best to suit your style.

I've had the Riley Pro 7.5mm for about the same length of time too. My teammates want to buy it but I've lent it to one of them and won't sell it! I go back to using it from time to time.
I bought a Geordie pool cue last year for a League raffle. It was meant to be 8.5mm but was 9 so I use it as a break cue. Disappointed with them but the mini-butt fit my old Cuecraft maple snooker cue.

The pool cue I use is 57" and about 18 oz. But the thing that matters most is to play with a cue with which you are most comfortable and can play your best shots.

3/4 cheap cue craft mainly ash cue with only four lower splices of ebony. Great shaft, 8mm tip, 18oz, 58". I personally feel 8mm is a nice tip size, have tried and played fairly successfully with 8.8mm tip but always come back to the trusty cue craft :snooker: same cue as shown here: http://www.johnparrottcuesports.com/...?id=622&cat=93

I've played league pool with tip sizes from 7.5mm upto 9.75mm and currently playing with 8.8mm, 57", 17.5oz, and 29.5mm, jointed at 16" and balanced at 17" and its just about right for me. I do sometimes miss the smaller tip but don't get the unintentional side now on long pots so its a good balance. End of the day though what's right for me will probably be wrong for you, try as many cues as you can and see what's best for you. In general id say 8ball cues are generally between 55-57" in length, 16- 19oz in weight, tip size between 8-9mm stick within those guide lines and I don't think you can go far wrong

Absolutely right. Experiment if you get the chance,
Good thing about the thread is I checked my cues and discovered 2 8mm one piece cues. One is a beautiful old Peradon that I'd completely forgotten I had!

I've got 2 3/4 Jointed Mastercraft Cues, one is a Trevor White Replica and the other is Emerald Gem, both similar spec 8.3mm tip 17.34oz.

I get on best with the Emerald Gem as it's the cue I have played with for about 5 years now, but I only gave the Trevor White Replica about 6 league matches since I had it made about 2 years ago it's now in my old case.

Currently just bought a 1piece JPU for pool. Its 7mm tip 57" and 17.5oz with a 30mm butt. If im honest some action on the ball and its lethal when your potting them, will take come time getting used to from a 8.5mm tip.

Its all down to what feels right for the player everyone is different but like said before you get the chance to try a few cues then surely it can only help.
