  • 9mm cue advice

    Hello,

I am looking into getting my first cue. I don't play very often so want something that is the best quality I can get for about 80 GBP without being too fancy... I usually play pool but it would be great if it would double up for the rare game of snooker, so I think a 9-9.5 mm tip would be best?

I had looked at the Paradon Typhoon or Cannon Magic, but having read quite a few posts on here perhaps this isn't the best choice. However, my budget is limited so a lot of the cues for 100-200 I have seen on here are just too much for me. There is a Britannia that ADR147 has on eBay that is tempting...?

Also the exciting cue builder from Mike Wooldridge looks great but I can't seem to open it, and I suspect it is out of my price range.

So... anything better than those Paradons at a similar price? and am I right in thinking I should go for the best 9-9.5mm snooker cue I can get and then I can always shave it down if I am tempted by a slimmer one for pool?

    Cheers

for Pool (UK I assume) I would go for 9mm for a starter cue, small enough to get some action on the small cue ball but large enough to not impart unwanted side.
MWs shop is shut at the mo, IIRC he said on another thread that is may open in a week or so.
ADR often has a lot in stock and not all areon his ebayshop, so I would ask him directly what he has in the spec you are after. you never know

    good luck

The cues you are looking at are all varnished and generally come with crap tips.

If possible I would suggest up the budget and get a cue for around 120-150.

If you stricly only have £80 to spend.

For me, it would be get something cheap like an old machine spliced one piece cue or a rack cue, get it refinished and decent tip and away you go.

its all about what you feel comfortable with i played snooker last night and used a rodney hinde custom cue and played like an idiot. Is one of the nices cues ive ever seen but just couldnt get on with it. Saying that it did not matter how i played because i had conceeded 206 points in two frames after having six shots in total

Maybe just a touch you won't get anything cheaper than £450

For 9 - 9.5 mm snooker cues, I would suggest you to go for Riley Snooker Cues. They are good to use, have a great performance and has a great grip in hand.
For pool cues, I would suggest you to opt for 12 mm tip pool cues.

I am assuming that elinor is talking about UK Pool and not US pool so no way would you use 12mm tips!
Riley snooker cues - good budget cues - ok but most are finished in varnished not oil. Some people have stickiness problems with varnish.

Machine spliced Master Cue at Craftsman cues are the best option IMO in this price range. They perform well, are well balanced and apparently have a good finish. I have a machine spliced one piece house cue from Master Cue which I bought in Brisbane and needed refinishing but it hits very well. I wouldn't bother with any of the cheap UK brands in this range.

GBL have the machine-spliced Master Cue models too.

I play pool with a 9.5mm tip and get more than enough reaction on the cue ball. It also suits me perfect for snooker.
Did you put my "1" up ?
