  • Aspects of UK 8-Ball

When you think about UK 8-Ball, the concept is incredibly simple. Pot all your colours, don't pot the opponent's, pot the black last, don't pot the white ever.

But actually playing it, phwoar, it couldn't be more complicated.

    I've identified the following aspects of the game. The aim of this thread is for them to be added to if there are any that I have missed;
    • Breaking
    • Cuepower
    • Developing
    • Doubles
    • Pace
    • Plants
    • Positioning / Cuepower
    • Potting
    • Recovery
    • Safety
    • Tactical (shot selection and stuff)

They are literally all the aspects I can think of. I don't doubt there are a few I've missed, though. Please do post what I have missed!

    Thanks

If your playing blackball, you could also be practicing your combination shots ( skill shot ).

Like many other aspects of the game, some folk are great at it, others not so good .

Growing a thick skin will also keep you in good fettle, when there's 10 or 20 guys shouting as your down on your shot, at the counties . .

Are combination shots where two or more object balls touch in order to pot?

Indeed, would you call that confidence or focus or something like that?

a combination shot is when you hit one of your colour, potting this ball, and in the same shot one/or more of the other colour group balls are potted as well. A legal shot in Blackball but not in WorldRules.
Whether the balls were touching or not - regardless; as long as the cue ball hits one of your colours first.
There is no timing/sequence as to which ball pots first, i.e the opponents ball can go down first, this is legal.
Also it does not have to be the same pocket.
In the past I have cleared a pocket blocked by an opponent's ball into the pocket and my ball has gone into a different pocket, great shot

Ah thank you very much! I was getting confused between plants and combinations :'). I do play World Rules, too, so this would go down as a skill shot I think!

I salute you for that shot, sir!

one or two things missing from your list, stance and grip; have a comfortable and stable stance and have a light grip. The grip will also allow for the cue to have the power you wish for the shot being attempted.
It does not mean have a tight strong grip for a power shot, the same grip for all types of power.

The shot descibed is one that when I used to play Blackball rules, but now I play World Rules, this Combination shot is illegal
This clearing pocket shot is quite usual, but still good to see (even better to play )
Plants are as usual allowed as long as you hit your colour first, and your colour ball is potted (WorldRules).

                    Technique, amen.
Jump shots are illegal in World Rules if I have interpreted it correctly.
                    Psychology, amen.
                    Etiquette, amen.

While stance and grip are missing from the list, would they come under technique?
