  • break cue uk 8 ball ?

How many players on here use a cue with a large tip such as 12 mm upwards to break in English pool ? Also looking for opinions worth using one or not ?
I personally find i can generate more power and break the balls better which lead to more chances to dish but other players in my league team feel it's more gimmicky rather than useful.

I just take two cues with me when I play pool, both cues are similar but I have a heavy cue that I use for the break off, almost never fail to get a couple off the break. don't like using a tip bigger than 10mm for anything.

I do have a break cue but I only use it occasionally, normally when tables aren't breaking well because they are slow or what ever. The spec is 10mm with a thick taper and 19.5 oz where as my playing cue is 9mm and 17oz. 95% of the time it is not required but it gives you the option should you. I agree with Rob the pro cup balls do split nicely!!

Funny how some people approach this in a variety of ways.

I have a Crispian Jones Certificate cue which was made ( for the original buyer ) with 2 x different weighted butts.

One is the player assy ( 17oz total cue weight ),

whereas the other is the break cue assy ( 20oz in weight ).

same shaft though, so you still need an accurate strike of the cueball.

Different things will work for different players I suppose.

I start with 2nd ball down stun shot, but change if it isn't working.

Agree completely- Old style balls I used to use the straight down the middle take a run at it and wallop the hell out of them, Pro-Cups Cut break with a bit of stun works every time for me.

I think the cut break gives you a more consistently decent split whereas straight into the head ball gives you a better split if you hit it really well but its much more prone to getting a poor break than the cut break if you don't hit it well. Also has to do with the table and the balls being well set up, when we got new winners in our local club it was hard not to pot a ball as they just split nicely with no effort, a year on its a different story on the same table and same balls. I read somewhere a lighter cue helped the break as it was about cue speed, similar theory I suppose to lighter golf clubs to generate more club head speed to increase distance. I think a normal cue is fine unless its a very small tip. Everyone is different if a break cue works for you then use it, I think its a bit in the mind though, but if it gives you confidence you will get a good break then that's a good thing.

I've got an American break cue, Cuetec meteor, 58" 13mm tiger everest tip on it and 19oz weight, rarely use it though as you look a bit of a tit lol. Picked it up at a car boot sale cheap otherwise wouldn't have a break cue at all
