The World rules are much better.
Old rules are fudging rules and matches could take all night. I have played a little league old rules and if they know you can pot they play easy snooker after easy snooker. Leagues that still play old rules are usually of a lesser standard than World rules leagues. Inter league, county and national are all World rules.
The World rules promote potting and have made it more difficult for boring players. The down side is that if you don't understand the rules in the games that go tactical you will lose. The thing is the problem is not the rules it's you not knowing them.
It sounds like Mellow you were in a strong position the way I read it sounded like you should of had a foul snooker and a freeball but maybe not.

I totally agree - new rules make for a far more interesting game and i prefer them 100%

I played an old rules comp a few weeks back and the oldies were rolling up - so frustrating!

Robert - i also love a good tactical game, however this was not tactical at all, its hars to describe the situation.

I had no chance of a free ball as i was never snookered.

In the end it came down to my patience (or lack of it) i should have stuck it out for longer, I now feel as i have learn't from it and will focus more in the future.

You do no that the foul snooker ruling is different than the total snooker ruling.
A foul snooker is when you can't hit both sides of a ball with thinest contact!
Same as the freeball rule in snooker!

This was a good mistake though because you'll learn from it!

yeah, of course, i could always see a full ball though, this was the problem, and probably what encouraged him to keep playing away.

It's just surprising how many people don't realise that you need to not be able hit both extreme sides for a foul snooker.
If you could see your ball and he kept giving you two shots why did you not win again?

I have no clue about world rules but I want to start playing pool again. Can someone give me a summary of the rules and how they can be advantagous and otherwise. Thanx

                    Have a look here.

                    http://www.epa.org.uk/wrules.php

Its too hard to explain, if you have any questions post them up and i'll try to answer.

To be fair it would be easier to take you for a game and show you.

There's also a decent side-by-side comparison of the rules here
                      http://arseweb.com/rupe/pool/uk_rules.html

A bit easier than reading through the full rules if you're already familiar with one of the older standards.

The rules are also available con the WEPF site athttp://www.wepf.org/playrules.php?option=1

This site also has all the details of the recent world championships, one of the reasons that the WR were instigated.

As answer to a previous post on this thread, the foul snooker rule states that it's not hitting one of your object balls on both sides, rather it's hitting one of your object balls with the finest cut possible on both sides. This terminology is so that if the cue and object ball as close, it is not a foul snooker.

The same situation also exists if cue and object are touching, as it is said that you have already touched the ball with the finest cut, so must shoot away, with no foul snooker. This leads to a shot where you deliberately foul, but leave the cue ball resting against an opponents ball, thereby negating one of his free shots.

Oh I hate it when people claim a foul snooker when they are right near their own ball. It makes me want to slap them!
It's not happend to me for a long time though!

I tend to agree with your dis- like of world rules..

In Wales we have many differant rules played in the various leagues, however we have in the last few years managed to get a lot of leagues going to Blackball rules.

Everyone playing the same rules would be so much better.

Blackball rules have their faults true but they ain't major.

The break off rule is one I don't like has you still need to pot a ball with your second visit should you pot off break

I assume I'm missing something - but I can't see where the deliberate foul rule is in the EPA rules that i've just read The one that Mellow Yellow is ranting about.
