  • 9- Ball Rule Question

Today while I was watching a 9 ball match today. Both the players were playing safe on the 4 ball. Then one player played such a shot that the cue ball was touching(KISS) the 4 ball. What does the other player do then??? Whats the rule?

I once had a BCA instructor tell me that if the cueball was frozen you could shoot at it provided you dont follow through too fast to double hit the ball. The general rule is if the ball is less than a chalks length away from the cue ball, yur gonna have to jack up the cue at least 30° or there is every right to have a foul called on you. Now i dont agree with the instructor and in those situations i shoot the cue ball just a little less than 90° of the object ball. have the cue ball go one rail with max english to get distance and perhaps even a safety between the object ball and cue ball.

Even if the instructor was right and you should just shoot through the ball, the chances of making the ball are slim to none. Plus, the cue ball will be hard to control considering you cant draw it at all; the cue ball will just skid and then roll foward.

In my opinion, shooting through the ball will be considered a double hit because the object ball will stop the cue ball for a second which will automatically create a double hit.

Ok. For some reason i cant edit my previous post. Just wanted to add this.

I looked at the world 8 ball rules and it said that the ruling for 8 ball is that you must play away from the object ball (90°) and if the object ball rocks or moves a little then there is no penelty.

May not imply directly to 9 ball, but it may be the same ruling.

And also, i have never seen anyone actually shoot through a ball when frozen to the object ball. I know in straight pool (14.1), you have to shoot at another ball if the cue ball is frozen to the object ball. Well, maybe not have to, but the 90° rule follows.

        Poll - Rules from PCA

If two Ball's be Frozen, so said the new Rules from PCA, the be like one Ball, You can play the way you like if this ball is on ( new but very stupid). This rule is for every Game the same: 8', 9' or Straiht-Pool, if the balls are not frozen, it is not so easy:
From Siverdragon "The general rule is if the ball is less than a chalks length away from the cue ball, yur gonna have to jack up the cue at least 30° or there is every right to have a foul called on you."

        This is not correct.
The rule said: If the White Ball runs more then 5.72 cm ( ~1 Ball) in the same way the Ball goes, that you want to play, it will be automaticly a Foul. There is no Rule how to use the Queue ! ( New since 2005)
You never have to play an other Ball, if the Queueball is frozen, in no Kind of Poolgame. But in the most times it is easyer to play a different Ball and make a good Safety.

Im Reffery (? is that correct) sice 4 Years in Germany and Play since 20 Years Pool and every Year the rules from PCA changed, its not easy. I hope the Time will come, that in Pool would come the same rules for a "miss" like in Snooker. It is so easy to play foul an make the other Player a Problem, but it makes the game to easy to win sometimes.

I think the object ball must move and the stroke must be "normal" in any case.

I thought the rule about the cue ball following through into the space previously occupied by the object ball was for referees guidance on judging "push" shots when the two balls are NOT touching?
