Ok firstly I apologise if this is a common thread but I am looking to design my website for my snooker coaching and would appreciate any help/advice from you more clued up guys and gals. I want a basic feel initially so something free would be good with a view of increasing site capacity and paying to do so if all is well and take off. Any advice would be very much appreciated thanks.

    Roy.

Why don't you just write the coaching section on TSF with Bongo!!

New site is nearly ready, just adding all the bells and whistles now.

But if your own site is what you want then whatever you do don;t go down the free site route, you'll never get found on the search engines.

    You will need;
    1. A domain name - I use www.Heartinternet.co.uk
    2. A Hosting Package - if you ask me nicely I am sure I can sort a deal out for you
    3. A website design - You can get free ones, you can pay someone like me loads of cash to do one for you or you can purchase a template from a site like Template Monster (Avoid the flash ones)
    4. A design package like Dreamweaver to edit the website.
    5. about 200 hours of reading to figure out how it all works.
    6. Don't for get accessibility!!
Oh and BTW .info domain names are only 0.99p + VAT at the moment for the first year.

Id be more than happy to write with Bongo. I could also introduce people to TSF through my coaching too. If thats an option Ferret I would be happy to do that.

Make a post in the contributors section (Under the private forum) and we can talk about what we need.

At the risk of upsetting Ferret.
Try synthasite.com for an instant free website with a free sub domain. It's all done in the cloud with drag n drop. Loads of widgets can be added and you can edit HTML. If you want your own domain you can buy one from them or cheaper elsewhere.

I have set up several sites for myself and others with no problems. (Although I do have a website on a paid for basis elsewhere.) I get my domains from 123.reg which has full DNS control. You need that to point the domain at your site. A .co.uk domain costs £7 for two years.

To get you started I have a website frontpage template that you can have if you want.
I used it to create the Manchester Snooker League website it can be viewed at www.manchester-snooker-league.com

There are some instructions on building a site with Synthasite here: http://justtalkaboutweb.com/2008/03/...th-synthasite/

Webnode and Edicy are mentioned too. Both do a similar thing but Edicy charge if you want to use your own domain rather than a sub-domain. I'm not sure about Webnode; I haven't tried either.

One problem with Web 2.0 (cloud) applications is the time they take to respond to your inputs, so write things in Word and paste them. Also resize pictures to the smallest acceptable or use photo galleries like flickr.
