  • Anyone play tennis?

I'm just getting back into tennis after a fair few years off and am looking into a new racket but dont know where to start.

Anyone know of any good sites like this one but for tennis so i can swat up on the knowledge before buying?

I play every saturday at my local club (though that doesn't mean I'm any good)

What kind of a budget do you have? My sister really likes the Prince range but they are quite expensive...

I wouldn't take much advice from me though: I've been playing with the same racket I got about 6,7 years ago!

    Good Luck starting up again

depends n what you can get for your money nowadays - never spent more than 30 odd when younger but could stretch to 70-80, but the cheaper the better.

would consider 2nd hand as well. i like a light racket with more control than power.

I'd look into a few Prince ones then, they're pretty light and have good control. They can be expensive though so possibly try second hand. It might be a good idea, if you can find a tennis club that lets you, to try some out for free.

I used to play tennis a lot. To a pretty decent level aswell. I entered a few nationwide tournaments for my age group. Never made it that far, as always faced one of the top seeds after a couple of rounds.

I always played with wilson rackets, as I got a discount on them. I'd say try a racket out if possible. My club has a shop, and they have quite a lot of 'test' rackets to try out. I tried a few out, that I wanted to buy and ended up really not liking them. I prefer quite a slim racket with a little bit of weight (still light) as they feel better for me. The chunkier ones that are really lightweight feel like they get more drag in the air to me, probably a mental thing but it put me off.

But just remember, you can buy the most expensive racket but it won't turn you into an instantly good player. And just because it's expensive doesn't mean it's the best YOU can buy.

too true, same as a snooker cue then!

i just want something that will do the job and not hinder my game rather than help it.

got my eye on this, bearing in mind its just a hobby.

I prefer Babolat, I've got full Babolat equipment. I also have an experience with Head, but I didn't really like that racket, weak string tension and light weight with really really little power.

If you want a cheaper racket, I suggest the Babolat Eagle. I use that one currently, but I will change it this summer. (I am thinking of Dinara's racket)
The racket I'm talking about is not too expensive, in fact, comparing to some other rackets, it's pretty cheap, light - weight (285 gr), generates a lot of power and the string tension is fine. It has a big grip, made for two - handed backhand players, as for the grip itself, I use the Aero Perf VS. (Very dry and soft feeling!). Here is the racket I'm talking about :

Another good racket is the Andy Roddick's racket. It's not really the cheapest one, but it is not that expensive. It's a FANTASTIC racket, not heavy, and it comes with strings on it, you don't have to worry about them for a while, since the strings on that racket are high quality. I think the weight is 315 gr.

The one you've chosen is nice, I guess you've chosen this one 'cause you're getting back on tennis, and, yes, light - weight racket are the best if you're just getting into tennis, but since you already played tennis I suggest a tad heavier racket.

I hope I helped out and good luck with this!

Who needs to spend a lot on a metal ring with a few bits of string
Its not like snooker cues, now a stick is well worth the money

Na seriously I know nothing, my first raquet was probably my best when i was playing in a club during secondary school, it was quite a light graphite one made for young'uns (the slightly shorter than full length ones) or i'd still be using it now. My current one was bought in France years ago

Don't make me learn about raquets too, I've already spent all my money on snooker lol

I think a lot of it is mind games. My first racket was a dunlop max 200g, that was given to me by my older brother. Bear in mind this racket was used by McEnroe and i was using it post year 2000. It was way behind the technology of rackets of the time. But it didn't really matter to much early on. I did get a new racket, I tried loads but couldn't get on with most, and prefered the feel of the 200g. I eventually went for a racket that felt right for me, which i was hitting consistent shots to the line with. It didn't have all the bells and whistles, but worked for me. If one of the more expensive rackets felt right, I would have got one.
