Two years ago my son and I attended a performance of Eric Idle's "Not The Messiah" Oratorio at the Roy Thomson Hall here in Toronto.
It was wonderful with many musical references to the Python's great work over so many years.
As a seemingly modest little finale, Eric Idle alone in the spotlight of the vast darkened stage began whistling you know what. There was an audible collective gulp and sigh from the entire audience...
Cries of "Yes!" and then "Bravo!" and "Brian!" rose from the floors and balconies like startled unladen swallows and then it began like in the film "The Bridge on the River Kwai" everyone started whistling "Look On the Bright Side of Life"... the entire Toronto Mendelssohn Choir began whistling then a half dozen opera singers supported Idle as he began to sing and then the entire Toronto Symphony Orchestra lead the audience packed to the rafters in round after round of this unforgettable song.
Everyone knew the lyrics. Everyone sang. Many wept.

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the original Monty Python television program, Idle, Michael Palin, Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam will be appearing in a remount of Not the Messiah at the Royal Albert Hall. The European premiere is scheduled for October 23, 2009. When interviewed about this production, Idle commented: "It is rare you get to be silly on a mass scale".
Thank you for this clip... it should be bolted to the side of the "Aaaaaarrrrgggghhhhhh Thread".
