It's been exactly 20 years today that "the Wall" has fallen.

I wish a happy celebration to all German friends on here and to all of you around the world who cheerish freedom and democracy.

    Thanks for remembering Mon.
The falling of The Wall remains a powerful symbol that repressive totalitarian control of peoples must be stopped and can be.

Here is The Berlin Wall 20 years ago...

I remember vividly in 1966 driving across East Germany as a teenager to get to Berlin. Access was relatively easy being a Canadian,
but we were followed by two unmarked sedans all the way. Before we even got close to the Walled City we were forced off the road,
made to get out of the van and four big men in trenchcoats rumaged through our belongings. They confiscated a Grundig reel-to-reel
recorder, all the music tapes, books and were especially keen on the almost fresh newspapers. They wanted to control information.

Coincidentally, this recollection came to mind last week in this thread about Suzy's situation, one that we should not forget...

    And Banksy's work in Palestine...

is a continuing reminder of need for vigilance against the psychology and reality of Walls wherever they arise.

There is a very fine line between keeping people out or keeping people in...

The desperate attempt by the US to keep the have-nots out.

Fortunately the world is much smaller now, more open, more manageable.
Every expression reminding people of the existence of this kind of tyranny and the responsibility to stand up against it is essential in our world.
Who knows what positive impact this sculpture may have had on consciousness 13 years before the Berlin Wall fell...

[ Running Fence, 5.5 meters (eighteen feet) high, 39.4 kilometers (twenty-four and one-half miles) long, extending East-West near Freeway 101, north of San Francisco, on the private properties of fifty-nine ranchers, following rolling hills and dropping down to the Pacific Ocean at Bodega Bay, was completed on September 10, 1976. All parts of Running Fence's structure were designed for complete removal and no visible evidence of Running Fence remains on the hills of Sonoma and Marin Counties. ]

And does anyone else remember this amazing celebration in Berlin less than a year after The Wall came tumbling down ...
