  • Desktop pc vs Laptop

Which would you say is better and why?

I'm wanting a computer but my mother insists on having a laptop because there smaller and easier to work with, I'm trying to argue with her so I could possibly get a PC, surely pcs are better?

Laptops are smaller but hardware upgrades are very limited.
If you need gaming ability I'd go for a desktop because it is easy to change the graphics adapter or soundcard.
I am confused... Oh wait... Maybe I'm not...

Laptops are fine for writing word documents etc. But won't be up to much for anything else unless you spend a lot of money, and then it will likely be bulky and heavy.
Pcs can be upgraded and you can build it yourself and save some money (though don't blame me if it explodes )
If you want games i doubt the laptop would cope. The pc could be upgraded in the future.

My pc is a few years old now but its still going strong. 3.6ghz dual core. Needs a new graphics card really as my 8800gt doesn't like my new 24"monitor
But my mate says i can have his current one when the new nvidia series comes out so i can wait until then

This came with 1GB of RAM I upgraded to 4GB and didn't notice a huge difference and that was like £80 odd quid for this laptop, will 4GB on PC be faster?

Yeah I do wanna do gaming to I tryed playing wsc09 for this laptop just a black screen wont play any games dont think designed for that are there

It depends what your going to use it for. If your going to be using it at home quite a lot for work/internet etc then get a desktop. If your always moving about and on the go the obviously get a laptop.

If you do anything intensive with your computer at all you should notice a difference going from 1gb to 2+
1gb actually slows down windows in general.
Its not the amount of ram you have that makes the most difference, its the speed of it.

As said above it depends on what you want your computer for, I get people coming to me all the time saying that thier computer is going slow and can I have a look at it for them and the main problem is they goto PC world and get a great £349.99 deal with all the latest mod cons.

These computers are simply crap made with cheap parts and second rate multi license operating systems which are packed ful of 3rd party software.

If you want a decent computer or laptop go for a top brand, Apple Mac and Sony is all I use and I have never had a problem with any of my computers. I got a 3 year old Packard Bell which constantly crashes and breaks, the hard drive failed within 1 year the card reader failed within a month of getting it and that was one of those £399 deals from PC World, my niece got a £299 laptop deal form currys and she has never got the thing working correctly.

I'd always go for a laptop And Apple, if possible.

If you are/will go to uni soon, then I say definatelly laptop. I don't know what do you need to do with computer that you would feel much difference between laptop and PC hardware capabilities, except if you're a graphic designer or generally need to deal with huge huge amounts of data (so need exceptional graphic or processing/speed). Gaming needs graphics too.
So if you for a few next years you will be mostly home based, and plan on gaming, then maybe PC is a better option.

And as jaguarf1 already posted, both is the best
PC for storage (larger capacity hard-disk), ehrm, having in mind also some stable movie downloading (don't know how much of that you do over there... we do here) + gaming.
And laptop... for just being your everyday personal friend that can go with you anywhere you go/travel

I have desktop and laptop, but would rather use the desktop anytime. If you can touchtype, you will find it more difficult on the laptop.
RAM does not always make them faster, you also need other good parts in the PC, too. The big problem with todays monitors, is they are not as good as some of the old type for photography.
You do not get anything for nothing! So cheap is not always a good thing.

So how much would I be looking at for a desktop that will be quite fast and not have problems?

Laptop I'm using now is a ASUS and its just slow sometimes I hope sometime soon there will be something other than the internet because god I have nothing but problems lol, also I only use the internet for facebook, this forum, fish forum, msn nothing else aside the 360
