Can you keep rats in aquarium tanks?

yes , you can.. but i think you will have problem cleanning it

you should also put a cover over the top of it as i think mice and rats have a tendency to get out of impossible situations. I wouldnt recomend a proper tank cover though just put some flyscreen or mesh over the top so the air still get's to them.

Yeah I was thinking a mesh lid but will the air ventilation be ok for them in this situation?

I used to keep gerbils in a 6ft x 2ft x 2ft tank and made a lid from square wire mesh. But with Rats they like places to go and to play. I would not say a tank is best in my opinion. The 3 level cages you can get are usually the best and not alot of money.

Yes i have 2 rats. And yes they differ an awful lot to gerbils. A rat has the intelligence of a Dog for example. Do some research before getting any.
