I'm going to be flying later this year and only went flying when I was younger I'm just wondering if anyone could tell me ways to be felt at ease and not worry to much because I aint hugely keen on heights neither once your up there in the air can you really tell much difference between being on a plane than being on a bus going to your local shopping centre or town or whatever than flying for 4 hours? Is it best to have sleep before hand because I was thinking not sleep at all the day before hand then go to sleep when on the plane and what is this thing about your ears popping also whats the chances of the plane crashing or getting turbalance cause I'm kind of worrying about it and getting fairly paranoid

Serious advise.
Go and see your GP he should prescribe you some diazepam tablets. Don't take the tablets unless absolutely necessary. You would be much better with that "comfort blanket" and not have to use it. However, if you resort to taking the tablet be aware that you may always feel the need for it to fly with.
If you decide to take it then it will make you feel very relaxed. Take tablet about 1 hour before you fly.Breaks 2010- 47, 40, 56, 53, 47, 45, 46
Highest break 69

Btw, if the ear popping is problem, i've found that chewing gum helps. Chewing it, that is, not putting in your ears. And don't think about turbulence thing, as often as I fly (that's at least 3 or 4 times a year for snooker tournaments) I rarely have experienced those. And the planes I was in have all landed. So I think you shouldn't worryZIPPIE FOR CHAIRMAN

mine was serious too..
the most important thing is not to be one of those wimps who stars crying and being all hysterical when the plane is about to take of and they have to call the doctors to calm you down and then you cant decide whether you want to fly or not, then when you finally decide that you want to get off the plane they have to delay it for another hour to find your bags.
its very annyoing for everyone else

Whatever you do, do not do as ja says and get drunk. It can make you very ill. Just try and behave as normal and try to relax.
I cannot sleep on planes, so tried plenty of beer coming back from Japan. Did not sleep and was very poorly. When we stopped to refuel, they nearly left me so could recuperate. In the end, the doc decided I would be ok. Have been to Australia, China and Singapore since, never touched alcohol and have been ok. Also lots of shorter flights.
All the best to you, snookerfan.

I'm not fussed on heights really, but it's different in a plane, i love looking out the window down at the world...it's great...and the funny thing is the height don't bother me at all when i'm flying, i think it's when i got nowt between me and a big drop that get's me worse...if ya get me...
And the pulling power on take off is out of this world, if you like speed you'll love the take off. it's a rush i tells ya...
It's like sitting on a bus but smoother and alot faster...
If it bothers you about the height that much just don't look out the window. pull the shutter down...you won't really know where you are then, unless you just work yaself up about it...
But looking out the window is a must really...
I love flying, The best bit for me is the power From standstill, pulling off, the accelaration on take off and climbing up up and away is awesome, it gives me goosebumps it does... i love it......
Your worrying over nowt, Just sit back and enjoy...Last edited by cally; 12 February 2010, 03:28 AM.

For a 3 or 4 hour flight I would recommend having 3 or 4 pints prior to flying which will really reduce your apprehension. DO NOT get drunk as you risk a) not being allowed on the flight and b) feeling rough whilst in the air. Taking potentially highly addictive Diazepam for a flight seems way over the top to me as someone suggested.
I have always been a nervous flyer and tried a few beers on the way to crete a couple of years ago. For the first time ever I actually enjoyed a flight and looked out of the window throughout with no worry about the height. The flight passed in no time. Also sit in an aisle seat if you can if you are worried about looking out of the window.
Yawning is the best cure for popping ears, sucking sweets never works for me.

Join the mile high club. Passes the time and will take your mind off things. Sorry BAD JOKE!
I'm a very nervous flyer myself but if you try to absorb yourself in a good book it may help to take your mind off things. Not sure if a drink helps much. Personnally I would need quite a lot before I relaxed.
