But if you go to a fine dinning restaurant (like a very nice French restaurant)here in Canada, say, two people, 3 courses, with a bottle of wine (just the regular stuff) will probably run about $250 (plus15% -20% tip). If you like to have a few drinks before and after, then probably $350, which is about 230 GBP.
I once went to this place called Picasso in Vegas. It was about $500 USD per person, not including drinks or tips... There were 3 of us and the bill was over $2500 USD (we had a few drinks). Tips was $500 USD believe it or not. Luckily I was not the one paying Most expensive dinner I have ever had. I think it was insane.Last edited by poolqjunkie; 8 September 2010, 05:23 AM.

I could take you to a pub with decent food and would cost around £8 - £10, plus your ale.
The best fish and chips in England are about three hundred yards from my house and you can get what they call a mini and it costs £3.40p, whether you eat it in or take it out, and is more than I can eat.

It is around $8-10 for a single order here. Which is about 5-6GBP.
But it depends on your choice of fish, Halibut is the most expensive.
So, a "mini" is more than you can eat by yourself? That sounds like a really good deal.
When I go to the Uk I will definitely try the fish and chips and the full breakfast and the shepard pie..Last edited by poolqjunkie; 8 September 2010, 07:45 AM.

I watched a documentary about British cuisine a while ago and they claimed that the quality and diversity suffered a lot as a result of WWII with its import stops and food rationing.
That would at least explain one thing that has puzzled me for quite a while: whenever you read British novels from the late 19th early 20th century, the food mentioned sounds really nice with all the different pies and various meat dishes etc. In a lot of the more modern British novels on the other hand they seem to eat a lot of junk food. In German/Austrian novels from the same period the food is rather similar to what you have now, not every single dish of course, there are more Italian influcence nowadays for instance, but the overall style. Still doesn't explain why continental cuisine shouldn't have suffered as much as British cuisine of course.
These are just things I got from books though, I can't really comment on the quality of British food now since I don't have that much experience.Ein jedes Werkzeug ist ein Tand in eines tumben Toren Hand.

Dan, whenever I have worked inland, the fish and chips have been terrible, nothing like we have here.
I have been to Germany many times and the food there is nothing special, so I do not know why the Brits have such a bad name. The Dutch food that I have had, has been quite ok.
I was in hospital in France in 2004 and if that is anything to go by, the food was crap. But, saying that, there was a supermarket almost next door and the food there was fabulous and the cakes and sweets were out of this world -- yummy. You have never seen such a display of cakes and sweets. Or should I say, I have never seen such a display.

I heard that the food is very expensive in cities like London.
I think this might be why people think the food is bad because the tourists go eat at the very cheap places and the food are awful there...
May be...just a guess?

Small and cozy, lots of stuff at the walls, true italian waiters and really good food. The fact that there´s no pizza on the menu says it all imo.
