  • Just saw Blood Diamond this weekend, and I have to say it's the best film I've seen in a long time. It really makes you think, and I would absolutely recommend it.

I think that must be one of the most overrated books around. I did finish it, thinking that at least the next page had to be incredibly enlightening and wonderful, but - alas - I was bored the whole way through.

The last film I saw... dunno. Maybe the French one about the penguins. It was really lovely. I want a penguin! It could also have been "der Untergang", the German movie about Hitler's last few days, based on the biography of Traudl Junge, Hitler's secretary. Highly recommended! It does, however, claim to be "authentic", but this is, from a historical point of view, nothing but bull****. How can a movie be "authentic" based on one set of memoirs alone? The ambiguity of some of the characters made me buy a book with biographies on the 10 nazi leaders executed in Nürnberg after the war. Still, absolutely worth watching. The scene where Frau Goebbels murders her kids is heartbreaking.

Isn't it amazing what big part the reader plays? I had very strong reactions to the book, boredom was not even close!

Indeed! And therefore I will never again sign up for another literature class at Uni. I hate being told how to experience / analyse a book, being told that my interpretation of it was wrong wrong wrong.

I agree on that! It's even worse when it comes to poetry...

I'm not sure the same films that are featuring the cinemas in Athens will be on in Belgium at the same time Wim, anyway "Blood diamond" is said to be good.
I was also wondering if anyone has seen "Breaking and entering", impressive names there, Anthony Minghella directing, Juliette Binoche and Jude Law starring...

                    • Don't mention it, I love the movies.
I haven't been to the cinema much lately myself, perhaps tomorrow that I'll be off school...
I just saw on TV, "The last King of Scotland" is supposed to be very good and Forest Whitaker is expected to win an Oscar this year. I'm not sure it's the type of film I'd like, but it should be kept in mind.

                            • The Prestige - loved it.
And i also saw Apocalypto - and err... not bad,a very good epic film in fact , i liked it tho, a bit to bloody for my taste , dunno why but Mel Gibson seems to have a "thing" for blood and cruel scenes . In both his films cruelty is taken to the extreme imo.

                              • Mel Gibson has directed 4 movies now. 3 of them quite bloody (Braveheart, Christ, Apocalypto), but the fourth one is a touching movie about a scarred man and a fatherless young boy. The Man Without A Face is a masterpiece in my opinion. And quite the opposite of the other three films.
