I also quite liked this one.
My favourite books and therefore the ones I would recommend:
Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck (a classic, to be read together with Woody Guthrie's autobiography Bound for Glory)
One hundred years of solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (I love his style)
Our man in Havanna by Graham Greene (another classic)
I, Claudius by Robert Ranke Graves (my favourite historical novel)
Underworld by Don DeLillo (don't give up after the first chapters )
History of the Peloponnesian war by Thucydides (if you are at all interested in Greek literature and history)

I did look into it for my studies and I liked it very much.

btw I read Kathy Reichs and Fred Vargas at the moment, very good, both of them.

thought it would be nice to have this back (as it´s winter and what´s better than sitting somewhere with a hot chocolate and reading a good book? okay, a lot of things but I wanna put those aside )

The last ones I read were:

Sophie van der Stap - Heute bin ich blond. Das Mädchen mit den neun Perücken. (sorry, not available in english but something for the germans)

Charlotte Roche - Feuchtgebiete (will be published as "Wetlands" in the UK). Don´t know if it will be published in the US. Maybe those in the bible belt would be too shocked

Leonie Swann - Glennkill (Three Bags Full)

        Sue Townsend - Queen Camilla

        John Katzenbach - The Analyst

Christopher Moore - Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ´s Childhood Pal

the last non-snooker book I've read was Halgrim's Helgason's "101 REYKJAVIK" and I think it was december 2007 when I read it.

I read it in a day, just 220 pages and written in a way like we met in a cafe and talked to each other. The spelling style is simple. When reading it you don´t actually have to think about the story as it´s not really profound. I found 80% of the book disgusting and I just hope I never meet someone like her and I would never buy it but as it´s been in the press etc. I thought I should read it to know what everybody is talking about. And you really see things with different eyes after finishing it.
To be honest, I never heard of Druckfrisch before

                      • oh, books are back.

I've read a lot since and the latest actually features a whole lot of snooker (the game, tournaments and many snooker stars), especially considering storyline and main characters are fictional:

Lionel Shriver (from Valderie’s post back up) - The post-birthday world

also interesting chapter numbering (all the midddle chapters appearing twice), as kind of 2 parallel universes explored after a possible kiss of this famous snooker player Ramsey Acton (seemingly kind of a composite of several real players).
Book is good, not overly brilliant, but the snooker and also American/English clashes made it a real interesting read for me.

Before that, strangely enough I had read another book with distinguished chapter numbers, all prime, enough to have me loving it, add to it the main character, a 15 year old autistic math genius and I was hooked:

Mark Haddon- The curious incident of the dog in the night time

And a couple of others in short:
Die Schachspielerin (The Chess player, but orig. in French) –Bertina Henrichs
About this Greek chambermaid taking an interest in chess

And last for now a rather sad one, but with quite some truth:
Husband and Wife – Zeruya Shalev

simply because he wants to know how to catch her
without this book he wouldn´t have a clue...
