    • Round 28 - letters in sequence

The word flabberghasted has a string of consecutive letters in the alphabet (fgh), appearing in order, i.e. the f before the g before the h (fgh are consecutive in the alphabet).

      flabberghasted

      Here is another example: foghorn

And another example with flabberghasted again: flabberghasted

I will call these words 3-Strings.

Here is an example 2-String: salt

Find the longest English String you can (no proper nouns). Post them here, and the longest found by 23:00 GMT tomorrow, Thursday 21 December will get the point.

If there is a tie - for instance if two (or more) people post a 4-String but no one posts a 5-String or longer - then the first person to post the tied longest String will be awarded the point.

Very nice. Of course, the letters do not need to appear consecutively in the String itself, as they do in your examples (intervening letters are allowed) - but they certainly may do!

Ginger_Freak is currently in line for the point, with the first posted 4-String... But continue posting, even if they are still 4-Strings. In this festive season, who knows - there may be consolation half-points available!

            • What about the Dutch city Abcoude? I know it's proper noun, but it still has 5, which is very cool.

                      This is the current leader!

I am going to update the rules slightly so there are not arguments over whether a word should be allowed. It must not be be a proper noun and it must be listed in either my Collins English Dictionary (which is getting on a bit) or my Chambers Dictionary.

                      Regarding the others:

Abcoude - interesting, but not allowed.

Hijackable – also not a word to my knowledge – and not allowed – sorry!

Abecedaries – sorry – I don’t know this one either. Is it a real word? Abecedarian would have been allowed for 4.

                      • Hijackable gets thousands of hits on google. :-)

And I think the word that was meant was abscedaries, which I came across as well.

I'm afraid that I won't allow the fact that someone has listed a word on their webpage, resulting in it appearing on google, as an authoritative souce.

                            Never heard of abscedaries.

Since abecedaries was listed before I stated that it must be in one of my two dictionaries, I will permit it as a joint leader if it can be shown to exist as a word in an authoritative source.

I have now found some evidence for this and will accept it as joint leader.

I would have thought that my saying so would be evidence enough!!

Ps, why is my post count not going up sometimes?
