I suspect that mens may well be permissible on Countdown, on account of its use in legal terms such as mens rea (guilty mind). It may be debatable whether it satisfies chasmmi's other criterion of being an English word, given that it is evidently Latin, but I think it could well be argued that it is now established as an English term.

I believe that Countdown would only allow it if it were a single word listed in the dictionary, and not part of a two- (or more-) word phrase. There was some hoo-ha about a word like 'folic' which was invalid, although the dictionary listed 'folic acid' as a single entry, the word 'folic' itself was not listed. Almost as if 'folic acid' were treated as a word with a hyphen, except with a space instead of the hyphen.

You play a long slow deadweight red to a corner pocket. As it approaches the pocket, a kamikaze woodlouse crawls out from under the cushion and makes its way across the table, conflicting with the path of the red precisely at the point the red gets there. The red, needless to say, veers off course, and the future of the woodlouse is uncertain. - The Statman

And SENT and, possibly, STEN (but sten-gun might be the only permissible form).

                      • Well that's good news!!!

Here's a question/task for everyone. I want people to write a sentence of 26 words, where each word begins with the next letter of the alphabet. So 1st word with A, then the 2nd with B, etc.

It must be connected with snooker and the winner will be the one that I enjoy the most. Away you go...
