    • Give that Statman a point!
      Congratulations!

So here is the scoreboard after round 40:

      Pos. . . . . . . . Points . . . . . . Person
      1 . . . . . . . . . . . 8½. . . . . . snookersfun
      2 . . . . . . . . . . . 6½ . . . . . The Statman
      3 . . . . . . . . . . . 6½ . . . . . elvaago
      4 . . . . . . . . . . . 5 . . . . . . . rambon

PS The Statman, I've put you above elvaago, even though you are both on 6½. Is that correct? On the Puzzles with numbers and things thread, we followed the opposite convention, and you would have stayed below elvaago.

      ROUND FORTY ONE

      ... anyone?

      • Yes it is quite correct that I should be above elvaago . (In this instance!)

        ROUND FORTY-ONE

Using the surnames of players who have played at the Crucible, how long a string can you compose where the last letter of one is the first letter of the next?

You may not use the same letter as a start/end more than once, including the first letter of the first name and the last letter of the last.

For example, using town names, I might have:

Holt-Thurso-Ormskirk-Kirkcaldy-Yeovil-London-Nottingham-Macduff-Freshwater-Ruislip-Port Isaac — I cannot think of one other than Christchurch now, and that is not allowed because my first name begins with H.

Most by noon GMT Wednesday 7 February will win.

Actually 25 is the maximum, since the very first letter and the very last must not be repeated at any other start/end.

              • Very true. I really should not post when my eyes are falling shut.

                            ROUND FORTY-TWO

FOUR is the only number-name that contains that number of letters.

But how many examples can you find of two numbers that add up to the number of letters in their combined names?

One example is SEVEN and THREE, which add up to 10 and which contain 10 letters.

You are not restricted to using only two numbers, so you might find that FOURTEEN and TWENTY-ONE and TWELVE add up in the same way, in which case that is fine.

You may only use numbers ZERO and upwards, so no negative numbers, and if you are using ZERO then the word must be ZERO and not NOUGHT or whatever.

Most by 2:00p.m. GMT on Friday 9 February will win!

No, you may not simply repeat an answer ad infinitum.
