One of the truly great voices of the 20th century - Mahalia Jackson - in what might quite possibly be the best footage of her in her prime, during the 1958 Newport jazz festival. Great band too (note the piano!). There's no need to believe in a God to enjoy these songs. It doesn't get better than this.
yes it was summer because i was in a t-shirt all night. i would need to look it up to see but i would imagine it might have been the same show - they normally only run for a couple of days. it was plenty warm enough although i live in scotland everything appears warm to me!
