  • MP3 / RAZR V3x Help please

A snooker forum's not the best place to ask but I guess theres a few here who could put me on course.

I recently bought my dad a mobile phone a Motorola RAZR V3x and he sees it has the capability to be used as a mp3 player. Now I've got almost no interest in music less in fact than my deaf son so when my dad asked me to get on ebay and source what he needs so he can listen to music when he's fishing he really was asking the wrong guy for help. So here I am in turn asking you guys What the heck do i look for?

I suppose it does not have to be specific to his phone but if the cost is far less than a stand alone player it'd be preferable obviously.

Fishing contests usually last 5 hours so from what i do understand about 1 gig of memory should be plenty, half that much would do.

Sound quality is more important than features such as an in built radio although my dad just looking for a reasonably average thing nothing expensive or flashy.

He has no pc so it'll be me who'll be downloading the music so ideally i'd want to download it to a gizmo he can plug into his phone. I dont really want to have to have his phone off him to download and install music to it.

I've got a data cable but no earphones.

    Any suggestions?

well if u want to listen to music on your phone! you can either download the music! or ask your friends to send their tunes over to your fone by bluetooth! Having some ear phones is also handy lol. Connecting your phone to your computer is also a great idea because you can copy and paste some of your music from your hard drive onto your phone. Just use limewire to download free music:P

Yeh a 1gb memory card is more than enough to store plenty of music!

    Hope that helps!!!

Yep, cheers Imy. I've got him a 1 gig card and the motorola earphones coming from ebay. Made sense to stick with the phone rather than a standalone thing as the memory card aint just gonna be used for mp3's.

Off to google limewire now in search of Glen Miller and Joe Loss stuff.
Ypu'd think at 77 my old man would have some taste in music by now but still.

You may want to check the manual about the card!!!

I got a RAZR V3i and I also got a 1gig card for it, but when I put it into the phone I realised that the maximum size the phone takes is 512meg

I wan't that bothered as I have a iPod and have also found that you can't listen to the music on the phone through the bluetooth headset.

Doh! These are the earphone i have coming.. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...7083&rd=1&rd=1
So unless theres some difference between the vxi and vx3 they are a waste of time then?

I've Just phoned the old man to have a look through the manual re the card size max.

Bluetooth is wireless so methinks those earphones i've ordered should be ok.

No mention in the handbook re max card size although i've just read a review of the phone saying up to 512 meg.

So the question is with the 1 gig card i've ordered (advert definately says ok for a vx3) will it work as if it's a 512meg or not at all?

Hi wity, it is ok with 1gb card, do not worry. In the review, it always says it is 512mb, but I have a v3x and got 1 gb card on it.

one thing for mp3 player in v3x, it can play up to 44kbps mp3 file, but higher than that, you may get problem to play them. Not sure about the exact limit, but some of my music file won't play because the bit rate is too high. However, if you want, you still can convert them with some free tools, but i think it will be too much work for your dad?

That's the frequency (kHz) not the bitrate surely? 44kbps would be terrible quality. I used to have a Motorola L7 (similar software to the V3 I think) that was quite picky about its bitrates, and I never really got to the bottom of what it did and didn't like, but VBR was definitely unreliable. 128kbps CBR was fine.

                  Hi robert,

you are right, as I said, i could not remember the limit when I reply yesterday, but i do remember there is a limit.

Just checked again, "The RAZR V3x manuel says that the handset cannot play MP3s with a bit rate of 192 Kbps or higher".

so, the quality should be ok, but not for high quality mp3. Some people suggested to use wma format instead mp3 format. and I also see some people said that they have tried 4GB card, and still working, but when more than 512 MB is used in the card, it may cause problem because conflict with OS...

Well the phone wont accept my 1Gig card at all and I just checked as I also have a 2Gig micro SD card here too and that also does not work! both are formatted and have nothing on them.

The phone does ask if I want to format the cards and I click yes and it just comes up with an error!!!

We may all be uising differant software versions maybe!!! The last time I hooked the phone up to the laptop it done a software update, that was a few months ago.

Card and earphones have arrived today so i'll get the old mans phone and see.

Thats something I overlooked: "Software". S'pose I can google for it.

There is one other problem my dad was having which I've not yet touched on, he could not set up an email account no matter what but seeing as i'll have the phone off him I'll give it a try myself first.

As far as I know only Orange allow you to setup your email on non PDA or Smark phones. I have also tryed to enter my pop and smtp setting but with no luck but I used to have the XDA 2 and I could enter my eMail settings into that. (Same network, same tarrif, same contract!!!)

No, it can be done with 3.com or whatever 3 's email is. His phone is on the 3 network and instructions they give sound easy enough to follow it's just for some reason it' would not recognise his password. He then phoned 3 and they confirmed he was using the correct password.

I'l give it a go and see if he missed something first though.

Would someone point me towards the software needed to transfer file to and from the pc please, or email it me perhaps?

I've put together 500 mg of music for him all with a speed rating of below 197 bits but when I connect the phone via the usb cable I only get the microsoft "new device found install software" message thingy to show.

The software would of come with the phone, but I use a USB dongle for my PC to transfer files, you can get one for about £10 on eBuyer.com
