I know in England the smoking ban is nearly there. It surprised me there was no off topic discussion on here. I admire it, everyone is accepting the new law. I already experienced in The UK, there was a good policy on smoking and non smoking areas in pubs. Much better than here! Where we used to be ahead in legislation, we are now far behind in many departments. It will be law here in july 2008 but I bet on it, it will be delayed. Another research, more discussions and tax money wasting by parliament.

How such a law ever got through parliment astonishes me. Here we are in a so called democratic multiracial caring society that legislates better than most if not all other countries for the rights of minorities blatently suppressing the freedom of around 30% of it's people with little or no thought to the consequences, just to satisfy the blatent lies of the anti smoking brigade.
RIP freedom of choice. Zeig Heil big brother.

And I say that as an occasional smoker!
I hope it will be introduced soon here as well. Austria is pathetic when it comes to legislation. We seem to be millions of years behind every other European country.

..........great thread, and must admit I find all this a bit boring, but it's life and you get on with it .
Most of my friends, male and female smoke, and I must admit I do like the odd one now and then, very relaxing, and very sociable, and I just love the smell. [hehehe]
And love this shed idea, although I maybe going into competition with you with my summer house, very posh?, no, it's just for me and the ducks, plus hens, but very welcoming to humans too ..[hehehe ]
And I will charge £1 per person entry fee, plus will deduct 50p, if they bring anyone of the following to kick the party off:
Wine [white or red]
Tequila
Marguerita [spelling a bit bad here...hehehe ]
Martini
Pina Colada
Guinness
Whisky
Brandy
Gin
Vodka
Lager
Beer
Lemonade
Tizer [you won't remember that..]
Coke
Water [if they have to...hehehe]
.......and think I maybe on to a little bit of a winner here, can you better that?....[hehehe]

been happening here in Scotland for a year or so now, and its much better....even most of the smokers who were against it that i know now prefer it.
i occasionally smoked too, but ive not even had a draw of one for well over half a year now.
during last years holiday it felt great to be abroad and smoke where you like, due to the restrictions brought in, but once back it was easy to follow the routine others were now used to.

Every packet sold in this country states that smoking kills. A claim that has never been proven but has been disproven hundreds of times by the mere survival of regular lifelong smokers way past their 100th birthday.
Smoking is a danger to your health but no one really knows to what extent. It may be only a long term effect as smokers live on average 3 years less than non smokers but as smokers generally are less health consious than non smokers that one factor only statistic itself is not proof.
Heart disease and lung cancer account for 95% of all adult deaths in the uk. That's smokers and non smokers alike, a statistic hardly likely to change significantly were we all to stop smoking.
We all inhale in the open air toxins produced from many sources least not the motor car, Carry on as we do burning fossil fuels and our grandkids wont have to worry about smoking the sea levels may well rise and drown them all before they are old enough to buy some fags.
Of course barmen, waiters, singers, musicians, and whoever else works in a pub/bar have the right to be working in an environment that's not hazardous to their health as no one makes them follow such careers. We all give up some safety aspect no matter what our job when we take it on.
The simple solution wanted by the vast majority including the owners of enclosed public spaces was to have seperate smoking and non smoking areas.
Like I said, how this ridiculous law ever got passed is beyond belief.

I know it's not realistic, but as far as I am concerned they can just ban smoking altogether. Even when someone who has smoked recently stands next to me the stench gets to me.
I used to smoke (a lot!) and now that I no longer smoke I realise how much it stinks. Yuck."I'll be back next year." --Jimmy White

On topic. What I have noticed on my trips to The UK that in a lot of pubs there was good ventilation and also a good division between smoking and non smoking areas. I also experienced people going out to have a smoke. The ventilation in pubs over here is dreadful, and very few have a smoking and non smoking area. In a city as Amsterdam I can just name a couple. It annoys me most in restaurants, starting dinner, the table next just finished and starting to smoke.
..........and sorry not to come back to you sooner, bed, interesting one, and how silly of me to forget. Bored yet? hehehe lol..xxx..
On topic, and maybe a little bit political here from me, but "the long arm of the state gets even longer". - DISCUSS.
To me, the blanket ban on smoking in public places hasn't really worked, and maybe the property owners themselves should determine whether smoking is permitted. Mind you, I suppose it's debatable whether you can ever actually own a 'public house', even if you have bought it, they are either franchised to a brewery, or in the case of a 'free house' only have autonomy as long as they do not break the terms and conditions of the license. I still think the customers would vote with their feet though.......
And as I mentioned earlier, I only really have the odd one or two socially, and if I'm honest I probably prefer a non-smoking atmosphere, but I still think there's clearly a place for smokers, and even for those who enjoy a smoky atmosphere, inside or outside.
Makes me wonder about the Government too, if it isn't simply prioritising it's own uses for tax-revenue over the desires of the people to live as they would like. You think they'll reduce taxes as the burden on the NHS supposedly reduces? I think we maybe paying even more for intrusion and state control in newer areas. What's next, a complete ban on drinking/alcohol, and eating?
I suppose whatever your political take on this is, some will argue as well that the NHS will save oodles of money because of health improvements...
Personally, I think it's another blow for freedom really....
