Greece is really interesting for me for its excavations, but apart from that I like Italy better, because the food is far more varied and the cities are nicer. The problem with the (small) Greek islands is that there might be something to visit for 1 or 2 days, but then the only thing you can do is go to the beach, which is not what I want to spend my holidays for. So I end up going to Italy nearly every year, even though I am more interested in ancient Greece than the Roman empire.

I'm very interested in excavations also. When in Athens, where we have an appartment, I have permanantly tickets to the archeological sites. And I go when it comes to me ... that's often
But my husband is from Santorini. The beauty of the caldera is stunning. The traditional villages and the some 600 churches ... I've been there many times, for long periods. Never tired of it ... and NEVER went to the beach except just for swimming. Would advice everybody who goes for the sceneries, not the night clubs, to go there in the spring and to stay ... everwhere they fancy except Kamari/Perissa.
This summer we went to the Zagoria in the North. Totally different ... impressive and peacefull

(please give links to the place also)

If i could be magically 'teleported' anywhere on earth without having to travel there, I'd like to see The Grand Canyon. Hopefully it would really be as awesome as it seems on picures and film.

u're joking, right? i'd stay for 3 weeks in Greece & not eat the same meal twice but then again, i might be a bit biased since i'm married to a Greek

          Italian cuisine is great too

thanks for all the replies. im glad i started the thread. some (all) very interesting posts (so far)

Just back from The Pelion area in Greece which is in the eastern part of the mainland, above Skiathos. Our 7th visit to the area and we are already planning our 8th! I've travelled all over the world and this has to be the most relaxing.
By the way Semih, I went on a boat trip a few years ago to Smugglers Cove in Zante. Unfortunately the sea was really rough and I was very ill - when they got there they said it was too dangerous to get off the boat so turned round and went back, another two hours of being very ill!! Put me off boat trips for quite a few years!

I'm so glad you had a good time Valderie! Welcome back btw.
Mt Pelion is a wonderful place, beautiful forests and running waters, picturesque villages, great food, amazing beaches at the feet of the mountain...

Ekphantos, what I do when I visit the islands is spend a few days on one and then take a boat to a neighbouring one. There are so many choices! Although for islands like Crete, a week is barely enough!
As for spending the day on a beach or sightseeing, I do both actually. After breakfast I look for a beautiful, not crowded beach, I go swimming and then sit in the shade and read or play backgammon with my friends and listen to some music (not out loud like some do, that goes without saying!) I prefer to visit the archaeological sites in the afternoon, when it is cooler. And of course a night out at a beach bar doesn't exactly put me off...

This is what I did anyway. About Crete: I spent two weeks there and didn't manage to see everything, I was talking about the small ones.
Still, the "problem" with food and nice cities remains . What I have experienced so far, is that Italian cuisine is more refined than Greek and seems to have more local specialities.

To be honest the cuisine of a place was never among my criteria when choosing a destination. I don't go on holidays to eat...

Food and sightseeing, most important for me. I always try to take a restaurant and an art guide book with me . So maybe I should try Corsica then...

Guilty as charged! My friends know that well, last time I mentioned it the response was "Santorini? AGAIN?! " I think only when I get them to visit, will they understand.
The pics are gorgeous Monique, I'll put some I have taken in the Gallery later.
