  • EuroBasket 2007

I can't believe nobody is talking about it yet! The first round is over already!
Down to the last 12, 2 groups of 6:

    Group E:
    Russia
    Croatia
    Spain
    Greece
    Portugal
    Israel

    Group F:
    Lithuania
    Slovenia
    Germany
    France
    Italy
    Turkey

The defending European champion and World Championship finalist Greece is facing the World Champion Spain in a few minutes. Great stuff!
I wonder who will win this time... I haven't seen all the teams yet. But well, I do have my fav already...

I keep my fingers crossed for Germany and hope that they have a small chance to surprise. Hopefully Nowitzki can achieve a good form in the next games.

          EuroBasket was confusing?

Anyway. To answer Sem's Q, 3 matches are played every day now, starting 15:30 GMT. I'm afraid I no longer have access to eurosport so I can't tell if they're showing it at all, I watch on ERT (Greek state channel).
There is live scoring on the official site tho, http://www.eurobasket2007.org/en/default.asp

I realise basketball is not as popular in all European countries. But to those of us who care and watch, it can be very exciting. In Greece it became the second most popular sport after football when our team won the European championship in 1987, exactly 20 years ago, out of nowhere. We are kind of hooked now.

For the record, Spain kicked our ****s big time today (again). Led in the first quarter, the difference in points rose to over 20 during the match, final score 76-58. The Spanish team is superb, World Champs for good reason.

Oh, and hello to you too Sem.

basketball isnt on uour screens too much over here, but i do like it, and would watch some of it, as its countries in competition, if i see it while checking the tv guide.

As I have played basketball for several years, I am watching the european championships, too. It's a great and very exciting sport, I love it!
I hope our German team finds a way to stop Tony Parker, they're playing at the moment. Go Dirk!! And go Ademola Okulaja (my fav)!!!

yeah, Gallis was one of the greatest Basketball players of all-time IMO, that game was great too (think it was sth like 2 extratimes?)... back then, i was cheering for the USSR, it was their golden team! today, i'm sure i'd be cheering for Greece

but honestly, i've been recalling that match for years now & come to think of it, i believe if it was repeated 10 times, the USSR would win it if it wasn't for the fabulous Greek crowd

seriously tho, it was one of the best Basketball tournaments ever IMHO

We beat them again two years later (1989) in the Eurobasket semifinal with Sabonis in their team (in 1987 Sabonis was injured)
That game was -maybe- Nick's greatest performace (45 points)...to be honest, he beated the Soviets all by himself

                        check it out...

Aah, those were the days!! I remember those matches and all the little details around watching them...
To be honest, I don't think any other player jump the way Gallis did for a shoot! But it was the whole team that performed that miracle back then, and I guess Sam is right when he says the spectators played their part in winning that championship.

Stormwatch, don't tell me you haven't been interested in basketball since you were 11! Not the previous Euro when Greece won again? Not the World championship last year when we beat the American team in the semis and got to the final? I detect a little lie there...

Btw, I don't see Greece in the final this time. Places 3-4 is more realistic...

Nina, I was 18 when Nick retired (1994)....
After that, I don't enjoy the game...I didn't even watch this year's Euroleague final , even though I am a (big) Panathinaikos fan

i'm a big fan of Panathinaikos too (the football team, that is) but i wouldn't mention that to Nina... something tells me she roots for another team
