  • Darts becoming more rewarding then snooker!

Ive been watching the new grand slam of darts event on ITV and they keep going on about the winner pocketing a whopping 300k!.. Im sure this is more than the world snooker champion would receive. Does this mean that a darts tournament, which isnt the world championship is worthy of paying more than the biggest snooker tournament? Is darts a so called pub game deserved of offering more financial reward then the green baize. Should the snooker authorities start to offer more prize money? How can the darts authorities be making more money than snooker to offer these ridiculously high rewards?

The whole tournament is 300k not just the winners winnings.

It seems that darts is more popular than snooker is now..more spectators and a lot more tv coverage.. sky tv has not only the premier leauge darts as well as the snooker but darts has 6 big major sky tournaments every year, with bigger sponsors willing to pay out big amounts for their advertising.

Darts is a sport that is currently thriving. Tell anyone 10 years ago that it would be surpassing Snooker in any department and they would have laughed at you.

There are currently 7 major television tournaments (2 of which are in the worlds biggest market in USA). As well as there own version of the Premier League which lasts 14 weeks and plays to audiences of up to 4000. On top of this there are 30+ untelevised ranking tournaments a year which take place in many different countries including Holland, South Africa, Spain, just to name a few.

The genius behind this revolution? Barry Hearn and his partnership with Sky television.

While Snooker is run by 60 year old suits and there "partnership" with the BBC continues to be stuck in the dark ages, while they all sit around dreaming of the last boom era in the 1980's.

And who was at the forefront of that last boom era? Why yes, it was a guy called Barry Hearn.

yeh i agree with you kimaster.. darts is on an upwards spiral and by the looks of it, can only get stronger! The crowds are just sensational creating a superb atmosphere. The suits running snooker need to pull their finger out and start to show some ambition in taking snooker back to to where it was in the 80s. Barry Hearn is also a sensation, certainly a very ambitious man who wants success. Darts has without doubt come on leaps and bounds in the last decade, and that is because of sky tv. They have pumped so much into the game and the fans are currently loving it.

When Ronnie beat Carter 5-2 and happened to have 4 centuries and a 147 I had a look in some of the tabloids to see how much coverage was given to this match.

The average amount of space devoted was about 2-3 paragraphs. This just shows how bad a state snooker is in. Surely the greatest performance ever in a best of 9 match and it is hardly even picked up.

In contrast some England cricketers fleding next to a tiddly cobra has about half a page give and a proposal for hard-bat table-tennis for the next olympics receives a whole page. It does just show how lowly rated snooker has become by the media.
