  • Your Music - Instruments played and music listened to

Now, I'm a very musical person. I play piano, saxaphone, flute, harmonic and violin [will do in December] but my main instrument is guitar. I've been playing guitar for six years and since then i've been listening to a lot of music. I used to be into guitar blues artists heavily such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and BB King. From then I went to grunge bands to neoclassical and shred guitar, learning from artists such as Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Tad, Green River, Mother Love Bone, Yngwie J. Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert and Neil Zaza.

Now, I only listen country, pop-alternative, Jazz and Western artists specifically Dixie Chicks, Brad Paisley, Jessica Harp, Vanessa Carlton, Tommy Emmanuel, Chet Atkins and Les Paul. It sounds unbelievable but i've grown really tired of Rock music and other genres you can associate with rock. I've grown bored out of all other music and it's now been about 3 years.

So my question: What music do you listen to and is there a specific instrument you play?

EDIT: My one and only prejudice. I can't listen to artists who don't play an instrument really well or have lyrics, I consider non-meaningful to me [if they fail the first requirement, I just won't listen to them, not so much the latter]. I know, it's dumb, stupid but that's what you get from being an elitist.

i wanna learn to play drums!
i've gone as far as googling up a few local drum teachers and writing down their numbers but what stops me from actually starting taking lessons is that i'm convinced that i tragically lack coordination and sense of rhythm

i play guitar, piano, clarinet, saxophone (a little), harmonica, drums (VERY basic), and i sing in my own band.

plus i write my own songs too. lyrics mean a lot to me too.

I'm listening to any kind of music, probably more favour classical. My favourite instrument is voice - I sing in a choir (we have very strong choirs over here, and I'm proud to sing in one of the best amateur choirs in my country), I also used to play piano.

P.S. Jane, my brother played drums in a band for quite a long time, I think I can arrange you some lessons

Well, if I apply your first criteria to the artists I listen to, most of them would fail. My favourite songwriter (Vic Chesnutt) can barely play guitar, due to physical limitations (he is paraplegic). Also Bob Dylan is not considered a great guitar player, but this is something I don't care about.
Your second criteria is the most important for me, I would never listen to songs with "bad" lyrics. Actually I consider the lyrics to be more important than the music, so I like songs with very little instrumentation that focus on the words.

As for myself: I had years of piano and flute lessons, but never got anywhere. I am not talented AND lazy, very bad combination.

drum accompaniment while preparing for shot adds dramatism to any match! (sorry to the author of the thread for posting off-topic in the off topic section)

I mostly listen to heavy metal, death metal, power metal, black metal, doom metal, speed metal, trash metal, nwobhm, you get the picture.

But I also enjoy blues, rock, classical and the occasional pop/rap song.

Favourite bands include Queen, Iron Maiden, Metallica, AC/DC, Opeth, Iced Earth and many more.

I do not play any instrument.
