What a wonderful thread for a cineaste wannabe like me!

My definitive personal list of the 10 greatest films ever made, representing various genres and ages, in random order:
              • The Seventh Seal (Bergman, 1957)
              • Christ Stopped at Eboli (Rosi, 1979)
              • Paths of Glory (Kubrick, 1957)
              • Dodesukaden (Kurosawa, 1970)
              • M (Lang, 1931)
              • Apocalypse Now (Coppola, 1979)
              • Fanny and Alexander (Bergman, 1982)
              • The 39 Steps (Hitchcock, 1935)
              • The Decalogue (Kieślowski, 1989)
              • Goodbye, Mr. Chips (Wood, 1939)

These films should be made compulsory to watch!

PS. Novecento (Bertolucci, 1976) and 2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubrick, 1968), both mentioned by Paul, was just nugded out. Wonder what Star Wars has got to do on this list though, only ever seen half of one, then turned off!

Guys, Hegeland and PTS you need to rank your lists otherwise the OP wont be able to score them.

(Assuming he does return to score and compile a TSF favourite movies list)

I merely chose that one for the special effects, not for the storyline . The scene where the base gets attacked by those metal shaped elephants is wonderful.
