  • Quitting cold turkey

    Smoking. Cigarettes. Tobacco cigarettes. After 10 pack-a-day years.
    It's my second day. Any practical advice apart from "Keep busy", "Chew gum", "Drink more water"...?
    Oh, by the way...Do you have any grudges against any professional players? I think that, given my current state of withdrawal, I can be of assistance. *rolls sleeves up, slowly*

    Alan Carr all the way

    have you read alan Carr's quit smoking book ?

    I would totally recommend it as it did the trick for me. After about 15 aborted quit attempts I have now been a non smoker for about 2 years.

    It's all about re-programming your mind from being a smoker to being a non-smoker.

    It describes how you are becoming free from slavery, and that it will be easy.

    It honestly works. It can be relatively easy, but you have to really want to do it.

    If you compare it to what the physical symptoms of coming off heroin must be like, then it is a comparitevely very mild withdrawl, lasting just a few days.

    Cold turkey rather then nicotine replacement is the way to go he reckons, otherwise you are just torturing yourself for a prolonged period.

    Sadly Carr himself died recently from lung cancer !! He was a very heavy smoker before quitting. Shame he didnt discover his method earlier.

      That's what I was thinking, too, I'm not one for controlled smoking and there's no such thing as "just one cigarette".

            Yes, that could be a good idea. I also know a few who gave up smoking when they became pregnant, but I guess that would be a rather complicated way to do it
            Shame I haven't got the will power to quit...

              stopping smoking

              I gave up on the day I had a heart attack.I rather wish I could have found the willpower earlier.
              Congratulations on choosing to be a non user.As soon as you think about needing a smoke,condition yourself to think of something else straight away.Gradually it happens less often.It worked for me - good luck.

                Fortunately have never smoked myself but have lost 3 close family through smoking so obviously dislike it intensely!
                I have always thought that if you want to give something up, focus on something else you would do with the money. eg book a holiday knowing that you will need the money you save from smoking to pay for it - a real incentive!

                  Oh, my, that IS taking things to the extreme, isn't it? It was exactly my excuse and my way of rationalizing smoking. Until last week, that is.
                  Excellent, coffee tastes fuller and the morning wheezing has gone. Note to self: avoid certain websites like the plague, since getting annoyed is the last thing when you're in withdrawal.
                  Worst cravings happen exactly after breakfast or lunch.

                      Good luck with your continuing efforts BC.

                      The good news is now that the hardest part is over; it will get much easier now that you have got through the first couple of days, and the nicotine will be gone from your system.

                        I would say dying from COPD related diseases, especally emphysema, is one of the worst ways of dying. Having seen fully developed emphysema lungs and people with barrel chest lying in their beds with ashen faces and dyspnoea, I would not wish this for my worst enemy.

                        I think spending one day with COPD patients would give anyone more than enough will power to quit.
