  • NAS Any good?

Just wondering if anyone on here has setup a NAS hard-drive on a home network? (Ferret?)

I have a Netgear wireless router - would it just be necessary to connect the hd to this through an ethernet cable? Also would downloading to the device directly be quicker than wifi. Any help / advice / recommendations would be good.

Depends on what one you get mate!

Yeah wired is quicker than wireless, my network drive is setup on my network so I can access it from anywhere!!

ok I have VPN network at home (just the same as a home network but with the added ability of allowing me to dial in) so I can dial in from any location (to my static IP) and control any of my computers with remote desktop or as I said access any of my films or music Eh..... um...... cough....... I mean website files from other locations.

Best thing to do mate is look up the model number of the one you are going to get on the internet and see if you can download an instruction manual, you'll be able to read all about it before you set it up then.

I must say even using it on a home network it is very handy, I used to have all my files on a 300 gig hard drive in one of my desktops but if that computer was off I had to boot it up to get at them but with the network drive its sooooo much better, I can just flick a laptop on and be watching a film from the drive in a few minutes.

I was thinking of getting one but decided not too, It would benefit if you have multiple user at home who shares same file and you don't want to leave your computer on all day. If you using it just by your self, there is not much benefit.

If you decided to get one you probably want to connect by ethernet, I've tried to stream a video from my computer with wireless using VLC and seems it lags every now and then.

I have the same use planned if I find a good offer.

Also, when downloading directy to a NAS device would it be a faster download speed than wifi b-standard.

After reading your post, I've decided to build a file server my self, I went for file server for more control, but is there any other advantage to use NAS other then easy to install?
