I've noticed ferret uses a lot of central composition so this will be a quick "how not to use it" post.

I'll take this one as a starting point. First thing i notice is the subject is too small and gets lost in all the grass and that the center of interest (the head with the colorful bits behind the head in this case) are almost in the center of the image. Since people at the first glance don't look at the center of the picture this should (usually) be avoided. The best solution is to use 1/3 rule and the golden ratio (there's a lot about this on wikipedia so i won't go into details). The second thing is that it is way too dark and the subject does not pop out as it should (looking at a thumbnail i actually haven't seen it at first). But no worries, nothing that couldn't be done in photoshop.

    voila

    with the grid

The blue lines indicate 1/3 rule and the red one is positioned at the golden ratio.

Although not particularly thrilled with burned spots this still looks fairly good.

Also this pic could use a little smaller depth of field and even though this looks like a very sunny day i think with iso going as low as 50 and shutter speed as high as 1/2000 s this should be no problem.

I hope i wont look too much of a smartass, merely trying to help.

BTW a cheap trick for macro is turning the lens around, but it takes some practice as you can't change the focal length

(ferret, i could't find the gallery, so if you would be so kind and move it to there and i'll change the links and delete them from email.si, thanks)

Good comments, I will keep them in mind for the future. I like your tip about the Macro shots just tried it out with some interesting results.

Just put a image up on my blog called Man on Fire, it is for a photo battle I am doing with somebody on another forum, the subject for the image was Unusual Lighting. My original concept was to have two mirrors with the figure in front and 300 night lights light around it to create the lighting but I was trying this outside and the wind kept blowing the candles out

            My thoughts EXACTLY.

Very interesting comments from Vuce. Obviously, Vuce knows a lot about art. The changes he suggested make the photo look more like a portrait, but maybe that was not Ferret's intention. You know, as the distinction between an interview and a reportage. (I know Vuce would say that it's about artistic efficiency, but I for one really don't know which of the two variants seems more powerful.)

            Great work, Ferret!

Well of course everyone should take a photo the way he likes it, but i've been there and had my photos torn apart by people who REALLY knew their stuff, so i learnt better. I just made some suggestions, but in the end it's up to him if he likes them and wishes to use them in the future

Since everyone is showing their work in the "Some of my Art" thread i thought i might post some links myself

Your photos are great Vuce, i especially like the one of the water lilly, Ive tried taking decent photos of my pond , but I just can't get it right. I tend to just point and click when I do photos, but I know in my mind what I want to see.
Anyway I think I'll give it another go and see what I come up with after being inspired!!!!
                Cheers

Thanks Teresa, that means a lot. Switching to an analogue camera for a while might help with that, as you can't just click all the time and the films aren't exactly cheap either. Anyway, after some time you don't have to think anymore, it all becomes natural.

I will just keep persevering and as you say it will happen eventually, I think you are right about the type of camera , I think I'll switch back to my old camera for abit and hopefully my skills will improve.

I am a well established national newspaper and celebrity photographer , i am freelance but i shoot a lot for a well known publication , i have pics in nationals every week . So looking at the pics once , there are some very good shapes, the tree would sit better if it was on the right as the eye draws that way , the wildlife captured are good, squirrel i like ,the hey bundles is a very well exposed piece , i would have focused slightly more on the bundle on the right ,to blur the others on the left more , to draw you to the right . i like the child model ,good movement great positioning very good background , the flowers are very good . overall extremly good , but try and develope your own overall style , but that standard would get you work at several papers , if you are pro allready , its good solid work . ps what camera did you use .

                              Thanks for your comments highbreak 8, the kit I got at the moment is;

                              Canon EOS 450D
                              Canon EOS 1000F
                              Canon Speedlight 430EX
