  • Rafael Nadal is a genius!

A few O'Sullivan fanboys and a few commentators with limited insight into anything other than a green baize have said O'Sullivan is a genius. This guy has won the most important tournament in the snooker calendar 3 times in 16 attempts. Rafael Nadal, whom I have never heard anyone describe as a genius has won the the most important tennis tournament in his year 3 times out of 3. He has never lost a match at Roland Garros. By the way, Nadal is a right handed person and yet has never lost a match playing there playing left handed at all times!

This is also a far more competitive sport. If Nadal isn't described in every sentence as a genius(remembering of course that O'Sullivan invariably is) then there is something wrong with some of these commentators vocabulary.

The difference may actually be that the intellect of tennis commentators far outweighs that of snooker commentators and O'Sullivan fanboys.

Nadal's biggest quality is his speed which makes him an exelent defensive player. In other departments (serve, play on net, backhand) he is just an average tenis player. He is no genius. Federer is.

I agree he is no genius. The point I am making is if the word 'genius' is going to be thrown around off handedly then Nadal deserves the accolade far more than O'Sullivan.

Genius when applied to a sportsperson is a modern use of the word and shouldnt really be used in my opinion. However it seems to have entered use widely. O'Sullivan is a lot closer to meeting the requirements than Nadal is currently (or almost certainly ever will be). As mentioned above Federer is also much closer.

If I was to describe a sportsman as a genius, it would have to be in a creative sense. I mean it's inevitable that someone will do what others have done but be a little better at it. It's about being a pioneer, being able to do something that everyone else around you would struggle to do even on a great day.

If I think about sport and genius, my mind moves to Zinedine Zidane, and Ronaldinho a few years ago. I also think of Mohamed Ali, Royce Gracie, and Anderson Silva.

The Same way being a genius doesent meen youre the greatest player...winning tournamants isnt a criteria for being a genius.......

i think theres confusion on both sides of the fence regarding what genius actually meen and winning tournamants and being the greatest does not meen youre a genius or vice versa.......

Fedor might be a genius, but it's been so long since he had a proper fight I can't remember

Nadal is not a genius the same way Ronnie is not a genius. Both are right handed but have practiced their respective sports left handed. Anyway since when has being ambidextrous meant you are a genius?

I agree Nadal is much better left handed than Ronnie but that is obvious. There are certain shots Ronnie cannot play left handed whereas Nadal plays all shots left handed.

No sportsman is a genius. It is an overused word. :snooker:

Why are people so amazed at ambidextrousness? It's like calling a piano player a genius for having long fingers.
