Seen it done that way on a few cues, just looks weird and makes the joint look like it's in a strange position. Suppose its easier than adding splices but surely it would be easy to cut the butt and add it in at an appropriate place instead of modding the shaft.

Looks a little iffy, those green plates were made by aeon who used a long pin joint (one of these on eBay currently), the joint in this looks like a Parris joint. Could have been replaced I suppose.
