I don't think it's completely useless, and it's not as simple as a single piece of card/wood with a line on it. That said, it's pretty easy to make yourself so why not give it a go, I am planning to at some stage.

The idea, I believe, is that the different height of each piece means that when your head is not in the correct position, the two lines (one at each height) will not line up correctly.

To make one yourself you need a piece of thick card approx 30cm x 30cm, and a piece of wood which is approx 30cm x 15 cm x 1.5 cm. (I have just made a guess at sizes, were I to make one I might make it larger, and wider than it is long perhaps.. not sure, feel free to adjust as you see fit).

Lay the wood on the card, covering 1/2 the surface, and attach with glue or similar so that you have a 30cm x 30cm surface where 1/2 of it is higher than the other 1/2. Orient it so the thick side is facing you and draw a vertical line starting on the wood and dropping directly down onto the card. It is important to get this line dead straight and in line on both wood and card, any discrepancy will defeat the purpose of it.

And that's it. Try lining up a straight pot and get down on the line, now move your head/eyes left/right and see if the lines look wrong/misaligned etc
