Am I the only one that doesn't know what the tannin is?....

I think maybe he meant to say tenon ??? as in the shape of the end of the cue before the ferrule is fitted

I made the mistake of leaving JP off my list. When I played in the UK I used a JP 3/4-butt which I bought sometime in the early 80's I believe. Unfortunately I managed to snap the ferrule and tannin off the cue and had to shorten it down to about 55.5" and it just never played the same.

I subsequently ordered 3 more JP cues but admittedly not one of his top-of-the-line Ultimates so maybe I'm being unfair to JP, but I found all the 3 to be much too stiff for my likes.

I have other cues here too and I just didn't list everything I have. I will be selling some cracking cues and very good prices just to get rid of them in the near future. I have and H&O, 2 x Robin Cook, Acuerate, LK.T, a couple of Andy Travis cues and all of them are around the same specs with ash shafts and about 17.5oz to 18.2oz.

I will post them up here once I decide which 2 cues I'll be keeping for my own use

Hi Terry, I've only been on the TSF for a short while and it looks like you have a lot of experience with snooker. Just would like your opinion of Tom Gauthier cues, if you've used them how does the Gauthier compare to MW,RC,DS,etc. I'm out west and there are a few available but expensive. Only thing holding me back on the UK examples is the pretty high postage. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I thought the wooden dowel inside the ferrule was called a tannin but I guess it's tenon? I've even seen tannin spelled out somewhere.

I have a pearwood shafted cue on order from Dan Shelton but I've just heard he's having some problems and is temporarily out of the business so I don't know when i'll get it, if ever.

There's nothing wrong with a Tom Gautier cue with the exception of the prices they demand. I have never owned one but I have tried out a few and I don't find them to be anything special and especially don't think they warrant their usual $1,000+ price tag. If you want a really good snooker cue for a reasonable price I would recommend Trevor White (trevs1 on here) or Robin Cook. With the Canadian dollar strong right now against the British Pound you can get a really good cue from eithe of them, including extensions and postage for around $650 or so depending on how fancy you order the cue.

Another bonus is it will be to your individual specs.

For whoever asked me what specs I ordered from Dan, it was my normal specs which are 57", 18.0 to 18.3oz, butt dia at 29mm and balance 16" to 18". I also ask for an ash shaft (pearwood from Dan) which is very slightly whippy as I find a lot of the British cues are a little stiff for me. Right now I have a custom Trevor White cue and I really like it. I also ask for my shaft to be finished super-smooth which borth Trevor and Robin did great and also is well done on the LK.T custom I just received.

Thanks Terry for the info, and waiting in anticipation if you post some of your cues for sale. By the way, do any of your cues have maple shafts,(just what I'm used to).

A tenon is actually the piece of wood that is made to fit into another piece of wood to make a joint to attach two pieces together and the JOINT is called a tenon.

As far as I am aware the wood to wood joint is called a mortise and tenon joint.The female part of the joint is the mortise and the male is the tenon.The timber under a ferrule has a shoulder so technically I suppose it is a tenon as opposed to a dowel,which although also round has no shoulder.
