I would'nt be at all happy with the splicing being that much out either. i want them pretty much spot on from any top maker tbh.
I don't like uneven splices..It bothers me...
And as said, paying all that hard earned for a cue that's not nigh on 'perfect' in craftsmanship is not on. IMO anyway...

splices are in fact just decoration, as long as it plays well! all the top cue makers could make sure every splice was perfect every time but the price of the cues would need to reflect this.

Just looked back at saman's pic, I wouldn't be too fussed with that. I mistook the picture as the points being around an inch out at first . Besides, the cue looks like a cracker, if it plays as good as it looks you should be happyLast edited by MattCash; 22 June 2011, 06:43 PM.

All Thai cues I have seen have prefect splicings top and bottom, and some much more expensive cues such as TW, JPU were a very tiny bit off sometimes.
When you are splicing and planning a cue by hand this can happen. But a cue should not be dismissed because of something like that, in my humble opinion-- if the quality of wood is top notch, and the cue plays awesome.
MW is always very precise, hats off to Mike.:-)
I have also seen some Hunt and also some of Robert's cues (green plate) which are not even on the bottom and these are not cheap cues. It did not really bother me a bit.
I have played with cues with prefect splices that hit totally dead with very low quality wood used on the splices and poor oridinary shaft wood.
In furniture making I see a lot of funriture without any screw or bolt used (e.g. dovetail jointed) that were jointed by hand and they were not "perfect." These are not as precise as pieces made by mass production companies--but yet these hand made items are worth much more. Some people appreciate the craftsmanship of a hand made item by a craftsman even if it means it is not as "prefect" as a mass produced item. E.g. a hand made solid wood piece vs a piece made with particle boards from Ikea cut by machines.
Of course being precise is the goal in cuemaking as in everything else--and should be so.
What I am trying to say is perhaps this should be put in prespective and not become something that is blown out of propotion.
Just my humble opinion.Last edited by poolqjunkie; 23 June 2011, 06:53 AM.

I knew it was coming LOL:-)
You can see examples of my work in my photo album.
Most of my cues feature even splices on top and bottom but I need to be honest and tell you that sometimes the bottom could be a tiny bit off.
When I first started I was not as precise as I am now.
To get all splices even has been my goal all along and I am very pleased to say on almost all the cues coming out of my shop this has been achieved.
My top priorities have always been selecting the best shaft wood on each and every cue in order to build each and every cue with superior playability, using the best quality butt wood splices and taking my time to employ the best finish by hand on all my cues, plus to get the splices as precise as possible, to creat something my customers would be very proud to call his own.
I still have lots to learn, but it has been a lot of fun so far.
Thank you.

to be honest ive made a few and mine were no where near but the all still played ok it deffo helps if you have woodwork experience (which i don,t) and some machinery at your disposal !! (which i dont) !!
none the less ive loved making each and every one of them !! blood sweat and tears went in to making them with just a no.5 plane and some clamps so i really do appreciate a the hard work and time that goes in to a hand made cue because i know how easy it is to fcuk it up !!Last edited by trigger666; 23 June 2011, 08:55 AM.
