Everyone will be different as its a personal thing but in my experience generally a well tapered piece of nice quality ash of the right density with just the right amount of give & spring in will make for the ideal playing cue for most of us, and its this give or flex in it that gives the right " feel ".
The way a cue is tapered actually effects the stiffness hence the reason alot of old cues with slim tapers are not always ideal playing cues, but an old one of the right taper & stiffness can make for a great playing cue.....hence the search for many amongst old cues trying to find one.

This should help you out and I'm sure JR agrees. Probably not the best word to use but Cally got it. Nice one.

i've never in my life seen an old cue that comes anywhere near the quality delivered today.
tip - get the tw thinned out, will probably play the way you want it.
I would not swap it for ten of your top of the range cues!
If you can get a good old cue they are miles better than the stuff made today.
