go to jjb with a spring balance for that kind of money you're not going to get anything remotely decent.

U alright mike? I dont want anything decent. I want something good value so i can test whether light weight is good for me.

I want to be able to reduce the length/tip size to try different stuff.

I dont want to spend loads of money on something and then it not work out.

Somebody, somewhere has some cheap machine spliced light weight cues. I just need to find em.

You can try some house cues, once you cut them down to the length you want, with a bit of weight drill out from the butt, they could be made close to 15 oz or so. Of course it depends on the weight of the cue, but I have done this type of experiment many times before and it works.
Instead of cutting the tip end shorter, try to saw off the ebony butt end which can really take a lot of weight off. If you have an old house cue with a 30mm+ butt, take 1" off will still give you something around 29mm or so, and you can cut off the tip end a bit, to get you your desired weight and length.
Just get the cheapest house cues you can and try this, you can find out what butt size, length, and weight feels like without spending lots of money. Using a hand saw could be a pain but if you have a power saw this is not going to take too much time.
Who knows, you may end up liking the cue you have converted.:-)

Yeah i had thought of this as idea but i dont have a power saw and not sure whether could drill through the butt successfully.

Is this something you have done in the past?

Yes, I have done this many times in the past. Mostly in trying to figure out something through experiments with cheap house cues.
You can use a hand saw, then use a file to file the butt smooth again. Cutting the butt will take more weight off and also helps to shift the balance forward.

Well, I have done it. Below is my experience.

I cut two inches of the butt. Made very difficult by the metal I hit which was inside the butt. Ideally I would have liked to take this out completely, but didnt have the right tools and even if I did have a allen key or drill piece which fitted, I think it may have needed the strength of the lathe.

Anyway, I managed to saw through the metal eventually. Butt wasnt too straight/clean cut but sanded it down and its okay. Not 100% level but decent for a first go with the wrong tools.

I tried to sand a chamfer with sandpaper and block but didnt work out to well so I started sanded roundness again and I think I have just about rectified it. Turned out a slim butt which is bonus as wanted to try this.

I stuck the pad which I cut off at the beginning back on the bottom of the cue for protection.

I sanded the whole cue through the grades and filled the grain with some craftsman cue wax, sanded again on 600 grit and then applied the raw linseed oil.

Fitted elkmaster tip and waiting to give it a buff in the morning.

Feels okay in hand, gonna play uk pool with it tommorow where I will get the real result, how it feels and plays on the table.

So airin, thanks for the motivation to actually do it myself.
