  • eBay Snooker Balls Material?

    Hello Forum

Was wondering if anyone knows what material these snooker balls are made from, I purchased them from ebay a couple of years ago. I cant tell because im not quite so experienced as some of you on here.

Im thinking of selling them so need to know the material.

Should also add there seems to be weird cracks in some of the balls e.g. the cue ball (see pic)

    Kind Regards

    Alex

Does the top of the box say anything?

      How much did you pay?

On looking at the pics, they are knackered. Unless you can prove they are antique balls (which i assume they are not as you have been playing with them), they are worthless.

It says they are tournament champion balls by Riley endorsed by steve davis, box looks around 20 years old.

I paid about 15 quid for them a few years ago and havent played with them once because I didnt know they were knackard as the pictures on ebay didnt show it clearly so when they came I just placed them in storage.

I actually assumed they were worthless I Just wondered if anyone actually knows what material they are because im pretty sure super crystalate or whatever balls were made out of 20 years ago doesnt crack like that?

I think you should bin them as they are worthless with a cueball like that. I seem to remember there were sets of balls by Riley's endorsed by Steve Davis and I think they came in a black box and were called 'Steve Davis Champion Balls' and they were even lighter than the Super Crystalates being sold at the time.

They are probably made of some kind of resin and it used to be when we had the old Vitalite balls the cueballs sometimes went that way along with some of the higher value colours which got a lot of wear. Anyone who bought the Steve Davis sets ended up tossing them and going to the Super Crystalate balls.

Thanks, just wanted to check. I thought they were likely to just be crap, but I cant believe that balls that used to shine could turn out that way.

Lol lucky you! I can honestly say the picture of the balls that were on ebay when i got them were so much shinier than the ones i recieved...

I thought it would be too lucky for me, doesnt matter though im no worse off and actually found something else of value stashed away (that has nothing to do with snooker unfortunatly)

They are the old composition ball (cow bone with cellulose nitrate binding agent), probably crystalate. They were superseded by Super Crystalate is 1973 which is a phenolic resin. Not worth much these days although I personally think they are a much superior ball to the modern resin one.

Its a bit ironic that eBayers have taken to describing ivory balls as "Ox Bone" and here you have some genuine Ox Bone balls, albeit that they aren't worth anything.

lol thats what i was going to say.

Thank you everybody for your aid in informing me of the material. I just thought they were very strange material as I could never imagine for example some aramith tournament balls turning out like this in say 30 years (they are so shiny!)
