So who is behind this?

Burroughes and Watts the new company was bought up by 2 chaps called Steve and Alan in the 90's, and they had their workshop for many years on Mucklows Hill in Halesowen. Not far from the original Powerglide company, just 200 yards away.
I had many cues made and alterations done by them, and they were two very friendly guys indeed !
Quite often they would sit in their lunch breaks and play chess, which is where they got the idea for a new range they were making at the time called Bishop, Knight, Rook etc.

Then after a while they got stuck financially and went into partnership with a guy called Malcolm who had plenty of cash, and moved around the corner into a new bigger unit. Anyway, it wasn't long before Steve and Alan fell out with Malcom, who is a bit of an OTT salesperson (speaking from my own personal experience with him) and they soon left. I think Malcom then hired some other junior and inferior craftsman to help in making the cues.
The last I heard of him he was selling cues from his home in Sutton Coldfield, as a friend of mine went over to buy a cue and check out his large collection. It's quite possible he moved his entire operation to Sutton Coldfield too.

Yes mate I do, and I thought that was so typical of my experience with him also.

I remember a day when Steve had just perfected the art of handsplicing wood veneers onto smooth black carbon fibre shafts, which apparently is a very difficult thing to do, and Malcolm had a few fantastic examples that were finished and ready when I visited.
Malcom called me over and invited me to play a few shots with one he had in a case, apparently the first one ever made, on a very old top quality original Burroughes and Watts table with beautiful turned legs. He gave me some spiel about the table being a survivor from the Titanic disaster, as apparently it was made to be installed in the ships billiard room, but for some reason was left behind. Sure enough it was a top quality table and the cloth was the very finest and lightning fast too.

Now I usually use a 9.5mm and the cue he gave me was more like a 9mm, which I usually find a bit tricky to control the side over a distance. Well after about 25 minutes and playing just about every shot on the table from every angle imaginable, I still hadn't missed a ball !
I even set up a crazy Higgins type shot were he smashed a half angled blue into the corner and off the the side cush with screw and side and back to baulk, and played it as smooth as you like center bag with control !

My mate rushed over and whispered "enough now, start missing a few, because he's been watching you, and you know what he's like !"...Well sure enough, the time came to take the long walk over to the counter and talk a price for this first ever black carbon fibre cue with a handspliced wooden butt. It was a very weird feeling knowing that at will I could destroy all my mates back at the club, and as soon as I saw the grin on his face, I knew it was going to cost me......£450 and NO discount !

Now bear in mind a custom made top jolly Hunt & O'Byrne was £375 at that time, as I had bought one the year before, and £450 would probably be the equivalent to 1000-1200 quid now. After 30 minutes of trying to get the price down with the man, my mate said "let's go, he's not going to be reasonable". I was actually thinking about selling my car on the way home to raise the extra cash to buy it, and when Steve heard that Malcom had tried to get £450 out of me for the cue, I think it was the last straw.
I went back a few times to try it out with much the same result, couldn't miss a ball !...Steve came over and said today's our last day were leaving and offered to make me an identical cue for £100, but as we all know in the cue world, there really isn't such a thing as an identical cue.

The last time I went there with like £400 in my pocket, and he said he'd changed his mind and wanted to keep it in the case, as it was the first ever cue made of a range he had planned to launch on the market. He talked about it being akin to the carbon fibre golf club revolution. After that I never went back, and had all the work done on my cues elsewhere.

Apparently, years later when my friend went to his house with a big wad of cash to check out his collection, he showed him a mint pair of original Mannocks that used to belong to some famous women billiards player, but wanted like telephone numbers for them. My mate ended up buying just one Burwat Champ for £250, and said the rest were way too expensive. It's a shame really, because we could have done plenty of business together in the longer run, but his prices were too high, and he was just too stubborn to do a deal.

I'd like to expand on ADR's reply... With absolutely no respect as you're likely to dupe some poor lad into thinking he's getting a decent cue.

People like this are a joke. You should fcuk off back to your day job at Wonga, Quickquid or any other legal con artist profession that exists.

Disgusted because it will sell for more than it's worth. Could be bought by some kid who gets soured by snooker as a result.

Is that the same guys who used to have a stand at reighton sands when the pool tourny used to be on, my mates dad once bought him a multi spliced cue off them for £1k and the quality and craftsmanship was poor at best! Shame that a company with such a great past and reputation could be ran so poorly, shame one of the up and coming cuemakers on here couldnt buy the rights to the name and put some quality and care back into rebuilding its reputation!
